"Mel is a great protagonist. She is easy for a lot of kids to relate to because she’s fairly smart, but is a slacker, isn’t really sure what she wants to do with her life and feels under-appreciated at school and at home. She is strong and doesn’t usually let people push her around. She is quite unusual and nuanced for a teen character. An important topic that hasn't been developed well

NOTE: I received the ARC through Netgalley.

It's tough to review a book that seemed so unremarkable that I forgot what it was about the day after I read it. And it's been about a month since... I think you get my meaning. I had to read the blurb and several reviews, just so I could refresh my otherwise pretty good memory. It worked. Sort of.

Now that I'm better prepared, I can give my two cents on this story. First though, I'd like to say that I've read several books on the topic of violence and abuse in the past months, so I have to say that Love Hurts pales in comparison. A lot. Here's why:

- the title is all wrong; Love Hurts implies that there is love in the first place. Well, there never was anything beyond attraction which quickly transformed into fear.

- the writing style was unpolished.

- there were scenes/dialogues that sounded quite unrealistic.

- the girl, Melody was way too gullible. She was supposed to be smart, but it seems that in books, the smart girls always ALWAYS lack common sense and do the stupidest things ever. Like Melody here - after her best friend Dustin hooked up with someone else, she threw herself in the arms of the first guy who looked her way. She didn't even try to get to know him better before she started dating him. Sure, she did a little fb background check, but even though the results startled her, she didn't get suspicious. Later on, when she put two and two together, she just went with the flow, being afraid that Colter would somehow hurt her. Well, duh. He already did, isolating her from her friends, her sport team and social life.

- Colter was badly painted as a psychotic guy. I think that his character was made to fit the crimes, and not the other way around (which would've been the more accurate approach).

I don't really understand one thing, and it's common for all Teen books. Why do teens NEVER share their problems with their parents or with adults who are capable of helping? After all, that's what parents and such are there for - guidance, help, protection, etc. It's their job to take care of children of any ages, so why are they always absent or not caring? Surely, the statistics aren't that dire, are they?

Important topic with good narrator but needed more to the story.

Love Hurts is a quick but weighty story. Ultimately I wish it were longer, and the characters and the events would have been more fleshed out.
I liked Mel, the main character, she was smart and a typical ya narrator. Though the writing felt off at times, like it was more of an essay or something rather than a flowing narrative of events like I am used to. It just brought me out some of the language that seemed too adult or formal. Overall though, I liked her voice and her story.
I am not sure if the point was that Mel realized there were issues with Colter earlier and tried to get herself out before the typical time that it happens in books with abusive or negative relationships, or that the crescendo just wasn't as fleshed out as it could have been. I did like the clues and "mystery" surrounding Jillian, his previous girlfriend though it made it easy for me to spot what the eventual outcome would be.
The secondary characters were interesting. I liked that it had diversity with being not from the USA, and with Dustin being on the reserve. The chemistry and build up between Mel and Dustin was actually one of my favorite parts to the story and I never really fell for Colter, which I think is usually an element present in abuse stories, because then we see what the narrator sees in him, and why it can be harder to give them up, which is how it goes in real life lots of time though.
But I really appreciated the courage that Mel had, and that she didn't isolate. Although she hid some of her doubts and questions about Colter, she also shared a lot more than most do, and that is important model for girls and women to see and hope that they could do and stand up for themselves in a negative relationship.
I also wished for more with the ending. Sometimes I think that open endings are perfect, but it just didn't quite do it for me with this one.

Bottom Line: Important topic with good narrator but needed more to the story.

Engagning

I am slowly working my way through the entire Sidestreets series and, for the most part, I find all of the books pertinent and spot on.

Love Hurts is no exception - yes, the entire story is very quickly told and settled, but that is the business model on which these books are based.

What I liked very much about this story is that the main character does not take forever to realize what kind of situation she is in. Granted, she does a "bonehead" move towards the end of the book which causes a chain reaction, but overall, I thought the story and the main character were portrayed realistically.

Another great book in the series. A must read.

About the Author
Lewis Carroll is a pseudonym of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, and died on January 14, 1898. His most famous works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There; and The Hunting of the Snark.

Martin Gardner (1914-2010) is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Lewis Carroll and his work. The author of more than a hundred books, he wrote the "Mathematical Games" column for Scientific American for twenty-five years and has been hailed by Douglas Hofstadter as "one of the great intellects produced in this country in this century."

The many works of Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) include many humorous and political cartoons for Punch and other periodicals of the time, but he is best known for his illustrations of the original editions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Class.

A Carroll Festival of Footnotes

When I was a child, I pored over my mother’s handed-down copies of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. I was delighted by the other worlds down the rabbit hole and on the other side of the mirror, enthralled by the Cheshire Cat’s magical grin, the live playing cards and chessmen, the further adventures of my old friend Humpty Dumpty, and the antics of the Mad Hatter and March Hare. At the same time I felt some of the frustration that a child feels while sitting in on grown-ups’ conversation – I got the gist of the story, but I somehow knew that there was a lot that I wasn’t getting, grownup humor that was going on over my head. Even later, when I re-read Alice as a grown-up, I knew I wasn’t getting the point of a lot of the satire.

In “The Annotated Alice” Martin Gardner solves that problem completely and charmingly, with affectionate and witty footnote explanations of Carrollian wit that are almost as much fun to read as the original text, especially if you are a trivia nerd like me. Are you curious about the inspiration for “How doth the little crocodile/ improve his shining tail”? Here is the complete text of Rev. Isaac Watts poem “How doth the little busy bee/ improve each shining hour.” Is it true that John Tenniel’s drawings of the Mad Hatter were meant to represent British Prime Minister Gladstone? Gardner lays that myth to rest. Other notes explain in-jokes – allusions to incidents and people in Oxford and the family of Alice Liddell that would be clearly understood by his target audience, the real Alice and her sisters.

If you first met “Alice” in your youth and would like to know her better, I recommend you snuggle up with “The Annotated Alice” as your bedside companion. You will find unsuspected sophistication in this old treasure, you will feel younger with every page, and your dreams will be haunted by nothing worse than the Jabberwock.

Yet Another Edition, but it's Worth it.

I've been an Alice fan for years and have purchased every of the (many) editions of Annotated Alice. You would think that this one would have nothing new to offer after so many previous editions, but it really does.

There are many new illustrations included which are not often seen, and other little extras that make this 150th Anniversary Edition a real treat. Great for the Alice novice or advanced fan of the books. The annotations will open a whole new universe to readers.

Hefty and beautiful

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

Now I'm a Believer!!

I'll admit I had nothing to lose here. My 3 year old son was coming home from daycare with 2-3 "Incident Reports" per day. 95% were for biting. I even had to suffer the indignity of a school meeting to discuss his behavior and if "there were any changes in his home life?". No. There weren't. His biggest life change was moving from the 2 year old classroom (no biting) to the 3 year old classroom (raving, biting lunatic). I'll also add that he has some mild speech and motor delays. Oh, and at the ripe age of 3 years and 2 months finally started to cut his 2 year molars. It really was the Perfect Storm for biting. And bite he did. He was biting teachers, his friends, his enemies. They even once told me he was sitting in a circle perfectly calm and literally just leaned over to bite the kid next to him. He'd also bite to protect his territory or when feeling crowded. This went on for about 6 weeks and I was at my wits end. Found this book somehow and thought I'd give it a try. The day after I started reading it he bit ONE TIME. I was thrilled. Not a single incident the next 2 days and now I'm a believer.
I was worried that it would be too "babyish" for him. It sort of is but somehow still captures his attention. He almost fixates on the page where the girl his holding her arm and crying. He keeps repeating "he bit her?" out loud as if the boy in the book committed such a shameful act. Not sure what he thinks HE'S been doing for the past 6 weeks but whatever works. I was about to start sending him to school in one of those Hannibal masks...but this was SOOOO much easier.

My Daughter's Favorite Book But Did Not Help With Her Biting Problem

I got this for my 19 months old daughter. She goes to daycare and had been having severe biting issues. She gets an incident almost everyday and at her worst she gets 3 incident a day. She does not bite us at home. She only does it at daycare when someone takes her toy away, she wants something that another child is playing with or another child sits closer to her and she doesn't want it. We dread picking her up because we feel like we're doing the walk of shame when we have to sign her incident report.

I got this book because this seems to be the highest rating book that addresses biting and it seems to worked for a lot of people who posted a review. My daughter loves this book and I read it to her every night before bed and in the morning when she wakes up. This is one of her must read nightly book. Unfortunately, this did not work for her at all. She understood it hurt when she bites based on the photos in this book but she still bites even after a month of reading this to her. Eventually, daycare suggested to see a therapist for both occupational and speech therapy and we did. So we meet with the therapist and she said my daughter does not need any therapy at all. So the therapist went to my child's daycare to observe her and gave the teacher pointers on how to deal with my daughters biting issues. What worked for my daughter was diversion, watching her closely and offering her something else before she gets mad. A week after that her incident starts to lessen and now 2 months after we're completely incident free.

I know some parts of my review are irrelevant to this book but I just want to share my experience hoping it'll help others too. As a mom of a serial biter, I don't want to relive that experience again. As for this book, this is still my daughter's favorite book and she won't go to bed without reading this. So yeah it's a great book.

Perfect Book to Address Biting

This book just arrived today and we have read it numerous times! I absolutely love this book. My baby girl is kind of a biter and it gets extreme when she is teething. I have noticed since being in Daycare she bites a lot more. To the point that I get calls everyday. I have cried numerous times because I feel defeated when it comes to her biting. So when the daycare teacher stopped and talked to me one day she suggested me getting a book that addresses the biting! Why didn't I think of that? I mean my baby girl and I read at least 5 books a day. She prefers books over toys. Reading this book made me smile. It talks about what teeth are for and tells kids what to do other than bite!!! I love it. It is a colorful book and the book is simple enough for your little one to understand. They even give tips in the back for parents when it comes to teething and biting. Reading this book makes me want to get the entire collection. I will come back and review the book again if I find that it helps decrease the biting.

Amazing Maxey

Glen Maxey is the most important, courageous leader of the LGBT movement in Tx history, and his book is a fantastic read--it reads almost like a detective thriller. Maxey clearly has a vast network of connections in the gay community that no ordinary journalist could hope to match. The direct evidence he recites is strong (though, as he says, it's still hearsay)--the stories of the gay hustler and the Craigslist guy are amazing. But the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. After reading the book, I'm convinced. I'm sure that some readers will disagree. No sensible American cares if Perry is gay, but given his recent vicious campaign attacks on gays, the real issue is about his profound hypocrisy. As Maxey recounts, at one point Perry approved hate-crimes legislation--but now he promotes hatred. That's the worst sort of hypocrisy. Last point: Maxey's description of the national press collapse on this story is one of the most interesting parts of the book, but downright depressing. What does this entire episode say about journalistic ethics and standards? This is an important, provocative book. - CV

Titillating but carefully factual

I have known some of the persons mentioned in this book for up to 50 years. I don't know about all the facts in Glen Maxey's ebook, but I do know that he has them right about those people I know. I personally wouldn't care whether Perry was gay or not except for his trying to rally his supporters around anti-gay bigotry. Thank you, Glen Maxey, for putting out the truth about the man.

Well done!

A well written document, and oddly, as a lifelong Texan, this actually gave me some compassion for Perry, the man. While it is heresay, and I would like to be fair, I also believe this is one of the instances of a hell of a lot of smoke indicating a fire. I have known Glen Maxey as a man of integrity and courage for over twenty years and his authorship gives great weight to this book. Having lived with Perry's governership for several years, I would not have thought compassion was possible. That said, Perry, the lying hypocrite, becomes more of an issue. Arrogant, and more than a little dim, he is an embarrassment, as well as a dangerous man to empower.
