A bold, iconoclastic view of Paul of Tarsus from the 18th century
By Michael D. Reynolds
When "Critical Examination of the Life of St. Paul" was first published in 1770, writing books critical of religion could be punished in France with death. Therefore the author, Paul Thiry (Baron d'Holbach), published his critiques of religion anonymously or pseudonymously. The volume in hand is mistakenly attributed by the publisher to two other men in addition to the actual author.
Thiry reviews the life of Paul of Tarsus as set out in "The Bible," and presents an analysis of his life and character. At the start he discusses the contentious opinions of the earliest Christian sects about which texts were sacred. He observes that the separation of Christianity from Judaism was the work of Paul. Continuing with the religion's early history, he states, "We should never finish, were we to enter into a detail of the excesses committed by the Fathers of the Church and their Councils." He observes how the "guardians of the holy books" were able to insert new text into them. Thus in just 10 pages Thiry anticipates major topics in truthful histories of Christianity of the present day.
The author describes Paul's "sometimes practicing, and at others decrying, Judaism," and suggests that this behavior was motivated by Paul's "own interest and safety." He explains the apostle's preference for and success in proselyting pagans. Nevertheless, "we see him excite trouble and clamour in whatever cities he happened to be."
Turning to Paul's character, Thiry presents evidence that he was ambitious, and proposes this as the reason for his adoption of the sect of Jesus. He notes that the concept of control of the sectarians by a "spiritual" leader originated with Paul, not Jesus. In relation to the other apostles, Paul was disputatious and "obstinately attached to his own ideas." One of those ideas was that Jesus was God. Thiry does not find evidence for this notion among Jesus' own disciples, or in the teachings of Jesus himself.
The study of Paul is interspersed with remarks about the contentiousness and arrogance of the Church. The book ends with chapters on divine inspiration and the foundations of Christianity. Thiry concludes with an exhortation not to take Paul as a model, but to be "just, benevolent, peaceable" and to manifest "not an evangelical charity which is converted into fury and hatred, but a real charity."
This is a remarkable book, whose author extricated himself from the prevailing thought of his age and courageously opposed dogmatic and distorted ideas with facts and reasoned analysis.Critical Examination of the Life of St. Paul, Tr. From the Fr. of Boulanger [Or Rather From P.h.d. Von Holbach's Tr. of P. Annet.].

The real Apostle Paul?
By Larry C
It is a probing exploration of the founder of Christianity as it is now practiced. This book requires and open mind. Warning, the faithful may be offended, but all would learn about the man, his teachings, his founding of many churches and his devotion to his own belief of the meaning of Jesus' words.
