A Great Farewell!
By Kinx's Book Nook
With 13, Kelley Armstrong ends the Women of the Otherworld series with her version of a happily ever after. Most of the book from Savannah's point of view. However, there are some chapters dedicated to Jaime, Paige, Elena, and Hope. Throughout, the Otherworld series, Ms. Armstrong has introduced a plethora of interesting and dynamic characters. 13 brings them all together for one last save-the-world adventure.

As mentioned before, Savannah is 13's main narrator. We have watched Savannah grow up all through the series. This is her final coming of age story. She has had to reconcile her loss of powers with the ability to make good choices and take care of herself. Savannah discovers that her magic doesn't identify her as a person. She is just as strong without her magical abilities. She is continually tested but she continues to refuse the tempting for stronger powers.

In the first half of the book, Eve plays a significant role. Ms. Armstrong tells a wonderful mother/daughter bond that even death can't destroy. However, I love how a daughter can emerge from her Mother's shadow and be her own person - strong, moral, and caring. Savannah knowing that Eve would do anything to protect her, finds strength and confidence to face her battles. Savannah, also, faces her guilt and grief over her father's death. The scenes between Kristof and Savannah are beautifully written and very emotional.

Love never really plays a primary role in Kelley Armstrong's books. However, Savannah and Adam was a nice reprieve from the overall plot. Their romance didn't overwhelm the story, but did add some spice to the story. Savannah isn't romantic person and I really enjoyed her honesty and forthrightness with Adam. She really grew up when her relationship with Adam changed to more than friends. She experiences some insecurities, but I found that refreshing coming from her.

In my opinion, the best part of 13 is all the Otherworld characters coming together for a final battle. Paige and Lucas; Elena and Clayton; Jaime and Jeremy; Savannah and Adam; Eve and Kristof; Hope and Karl; Cassandra and Aaron - all present and accounted for. Plus, one surprise character that I won't reveal. It's a shocker! I found it amazing how Ms. Armstrong could keep all the characters engaged without overwhelming the reader.

Ms. Armstrong gave us a wonderful farewell to the Otherworld series. However, The ending is open-ended which leaves plenty of opportunity to carry on with more Otherworld stories. I have a feeling we aren't seeing the end for these wonderful characters.

Great Book!

Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong (Women of the Otherworld #4)
Publisher: Bantam
Published: October 26, 2004
Format: Ebook, 560 pages
Genre: Urban Fantasy

From Goodreads:

In the aftermath of her mother's murder, Paige broke with the elite, ultraconservative American Coven of Witches. Now her goal is to start a new Coven for a new generation. But while Paige pitches her vision to uptight thirty-something witches in business suits, a more urgent matter commands her attention.

Someone is murdering the teenage offspring of the underworld's most influential Cabals- a circle of families that makes the mob look like amateurs. And none is more powerful than the Cortex Cabal, a faction Paige is intimately acquainted with. Lucas Cortez, the rebel son and unwilling heir, is none other than her boyfriend. But love isn't blind, and Paige has her eyes wide open as she is drawn into a hunt for an unnatural-born killer. Pitted against shamans, demons, and goons, it's a battle chilling enough to make a wild young woman grow up in a hurry. If she gets the chance.

Industrial Magic is the fourth book in the Women of the Otherworld series and is from the perspective of the witch, Paige Winterbourne. We last left Paige trying to take care of her new ward and fellow witch, Savannah, and starting a new relationship with a sorcerer, Lucas Cortez. Now she is trying to establish a new witch coven that is more tolerate and accepting than the American Coven. Paige is one of my favorite female characters in the Otherworld series. She is strong, independent and very feisty. She is constantly challenging accepted norms within the supernatural world. She doesn't want to be hindered by the existing witches' traditions and mentality. She wants to grow and be able to protect herself, not just sit back and let the evil powers take over. She is a great character and very well-written and developed.

Paige and Lucas make a great pair. Both are always learning, wanting to increase their knowledge of spells. Her inquisitiveness is one of my favorite of her traits. They are willing to teach each spells that were only meant for a sorcerer or a witch. Paige is always lookout for a new speill, even if that spell is dark magic. She has to be pretty sneaky because she doesn't want Savannah to be aware of anything dark magic. I think their dynamic is pretty comical when it comes to using dark magic. Savannah doesn't see it as a big deal and Paige tries to take the high road. It is a constant disagreement for them.

Since starting their budding relationship, Paige and Lucas are trying to maintain a level of trust that isn't common among witches and sorcerers. With Paige's introduction to the Cortez Cabal, finding that trust is a challenge. I like that we are given a more detailed understanding of the Cabals. The Cortez Cabal reminds me of the Corleone Family. You love them but you hate them at the same time. Lucas, like Michael Corleone, is constantly being dragged into the family business. His father is very manipulative and tries at every turn to convince him to be more involved in the family business. Lucas and Paige constantly struggle with his family to maintain their independence.

I'm really liking that the series is continues to bring in more of the supernatural characters. Besides witches, vampires are now front and center. They are at the center of the Cabal murders. Cassandra and Adams make for some interesting characters. The werewolves also make an appearance, as does Jamie Vegas, necromancer. Even Eve Levine has some serious time in this novel. Like all of the books in this series, Industrial Magic is wonderfully fast-paced and a great read.

Exciting
By Kindle Customer
This is the second "Women of the Otherworld" book narrated by Paige Winterbourne. I am still not wild about Paige, as a narrator she is pretty boring - know-it-all and self-righteous. The romance between her and Lucas Cortez is also just meh. Lucas is honest, loyal, dedicated, always fights for a good cause, basically your average nice guy which would make him a great real life partner, but as a fictional paranormal lover he just doesn't cut it IMO. Nevertheless, this book is great, thanks to the plot and a cast of great secondary characters.

The story here is as follows: the Cabal teenage kids are being murdered by a mysterious killer and Paige and Lucas are called on by Lucas's father to help out with the investigation. What follows is an exciting hunt for the perpetrator. During the chase we revisit our old faves from previous books: Adam, Cassandra, Aaron, Jeremy, Elena, and (thank god!) Clayton. We are also introduced to some very colorful new characters: Jaime Vegas - a necromancer, a clairvoyant, Eve's ghost, and even an obnoxious Celtic deity. Sounds crazy? Yes, it kind of is, but somehow it works in this book. The new mythology Armstrong introduces is exciting and entertaining too.

On the negative side, to keep track of so many characters requires a lot of logistics explanations on the author's part, and at times it's just a bit too much work to follow who went where, when, and how. But pretty soon you learn to tune these things out completely. If I am being objective, some cameo appearances turn out to be just that - appearances, without significantly advancing the plot, but because you like these characters, you overlook that as well.

Overall, "Industrial Magic" is a great fast-paced story which re-awakened my interest in the series.
