Excellent translation!

A much better translation than that of Rossi (aka Japrisot). The Saumont translation is much more informal. Saumont uses the passé composé instead of the passé simple, which, of course, places the narrative in a much more conversational register. Saumont also makes masterful syntactic and lexical choices to render in French the slangy, teenage male register of the narrator.

Of course, I'm making these comments from the point of view of a native speaker of American English who was 14 when _The Catcher in the Rye_ was published, so I am much more familiar with how the English "sounds" to an American ear than how the French translation "sounds" to a French ear. The English sounds very natural, very much the way a rebellious teenage boy of that era would speak. I can only guess how natural the French translation sounds, except that my French is good enough, I think, to recognize that the Saumont translation is more faithful than Rossi's to the conversational, slangy register of the original English.

I would be very interested in hearing the opinion of a native French speaker.

An Interesting Discussion of an Increasingly Relevant Topic

Increasing in humans intelligence, life span, moral practices, and/or other central human qualities far beyond what is ordinarily possible is what is meant by radical enhancement. It would seem initially to be desirable prosect, and hence one difficult to reject. Nicholas Agar musters an array of arguments to chip away at this desirability, this difficulty, and eventually succeeds in producing some doubt.

These arguments are not deployed independently, in a vacuum. Ultimately they relate based upon what Agar terms "species relativism," the view that the value of experiences is relative to a species. Agar allows that the experiences of human beings may be "objectively" worse than the experiences possible for those who people who have undergone radical enhancement and become, in that sense, "post-human." Yet he holds that this is not a reason for pursuing radical enhancement.

It is important, when reading this book, to keep track of the big picture, to identify the major assumptions Nicholas Agar makes even as he presents specific points against the various theories and aspects of radical enhancement (he chooses to focus on the views of four advocates of radical enhancement). In other words, remember to ask if what he says is sound, not simply valid. His conversational style of writing may lull you into a sense of faith that you really accept what he says. Stay alert, and do not let that happen.

This is a subject worth taking seriously. Radical enhancement may never be available to you and me, but a careful reading of this book should help to decide whether it probably will or will not. If radical enhancement does become available to anybody, then the choice of whether to accept it has profound consequences for the individual, and for society itself. If you wish to become properly informed about that choice, either for personal reasons or to understand what future generations may need to decide, then this book by Nicholas Agar is a very good place to start.

A thoughtful rebuttal of sorts to the rosy forecasts of the Singularity. Tells us why the utopia may well get dystopian, and introduces us to prublems, such as with consciousness, that we don't need to worry about now, but will, as computers get more and more powerful.

Agar takes various elements of the radical enhancers prognostications and one-by-one throws on them sufficient doubt as to leave the reader rather convinced that they are way off and even if foreseeable are far from being desirable.

Worth every penny

Both strategic and pragmatic, James covers all the angles you need to understand in order to build an intranet that works.
What makes this book unique is that it is not "consultant-speak". It is from the real world, gives real world examples, and is inspiring at the same time.

A Must for Every Seventh-day Adventist!

Reading Ellen White is by far one the most priceless books I have ever read. This book has laid out in a simple manner the keys to effectively and accurately interpreting the writings of Ellen White. What makes this book so powerful is the fact that the author - George Knight - does not seek to establish his own method of interpretation, but rather present's to the reader how Ellen White herself related to - and interpreted her own writings. It is interesting to see how some of Ellen Whites quotations dealing on the same issue can at first glance appear to contradict one another. However, this is the same way the Bible can appear. A comprehensive study on the topic in question would allow one to reach a balanced conclusion that would spare the sincere reader all of the drama associated with extremes.

In Reading Ellen White, George Knight presents several warnings as well. One of those warnings I found especially helpful to myself. The warning is found in the chapter titled, `Focus on the Central Issues'. Here George Knight presents what he refers to as , `the theology of the center'. This theology invites the reader to focus on the central themes of a passage instead of looking for side issues that don't matter. In the chapter that followed, George Knight gave an example of a movement in Ellen White's day calling the remnant church to abandon shaving. According to them shaving was `the god of this age' and should not be practiced by those claiming to be God's children. They quoted Matthew 10:30 which says that God has numbered all of the hairs on our head. According to them, cutting off what God had cared enough to count was arrogance. However, the central issue of the text is not that God doesn't want us to shave but that He loves us and knows us better than we know ourselves. By focusing on the central themes we can avoid falling into fanatical snares such as this one.

Another chapter that I found very powerful was the chapter titled, `Use Common Sense'. George Knight gave some great advise and also showed how not following this counsel can be deadly. He told the story of a group of seven missionaries who wanted to be so faithful to the letter of the law that they ended up dying. In this scenario a disease had stricken the region where they worked and drugs were administered to prevent sickness and death. However, six of the seven missionaries did not accept the drug because Ellen White had counseled against the use of that drug among others. All six of them died. The one that lived was the one who used common sense and took the drug. Was he unfaithful? According to Ellen White, he was not. A man who had lost his son due to a similar scenario asked Ellen if it would have been sin for him to give his son the drug. She replied `No, we are expected to do the best we can.'

In conclusion, if you want to learn how to read Ellen White without becoming a sour faced extremist that nobody likes ( a description of the vast majority of EGW readers) then read this book. In it George Knight shows how balanced Ellen White truly was and how misused her writings actually are. You will walk away from this read with a new appreciation for her gift and a better understanding on how to read and apply her counsels.

Fabulous book.

Reading Ellen White is a wonderful book. It is useful in explaining that Mrs. White was not a radical or extreme personality. Many of the things she was quoted as saying were applicable only to one individual for a specific set of circumstances, not to be applied generally. This book assists in understanding how to read and understand and apply her writings. Totally wonderful book.
