Why We Fish: Reel Wisdom From Real Fishermen, by Robert U. Montgomery

Why do we fish? Most fishermen (and women) don’t stop to analyze why we love fishing. We’re too busy planning our next trip or daydreaming about the fish that got away. We hook fish; they hook us. It’s that simple. Yet, the subject is deeper than it appears. Nationally recognized fishing writer Robert U. Montgomery began pondering this question about 20 years ago, when he realized how fishing helped him survive the death of his best friends. Robert discovered that we fish to remember, and we fish to forget. We fish when we’re happy, and when we’re sad. We fish to bond with friends and family, or to be alone. Whatever our motivation, no matter where we are on the success spectrum, fishing makes our lives better in ways we never could have imagined. It slows us down. It sets us free. It teaches us about nature, even while showing us how much we don’t know. And fishing becomes the foundation for our fondest memories. In Why We Fish, Robert Montgomery examines the reasons we keep going back to the water and how fishing enriches us, both individually and as a society. Contributed by ten passionate anglers, the essays on these pages celebrate the tangible and intangible blessings we derive from one of man’s oldest pastimes. What is life all about? Go fishing and find out. But first, enjoy the wonderful essays in Why We Fish.

About the Author
Robert U. Montgomery has been hooked on fishing since he first tried the sport during a Cub Scouts’ outing. A degree in journalism from the University of Missouri helped him turn his passion into a career as a fishing writer. He is author of Better Bass Fishing (Countryman Press) and founder of Activist Angler, a website devoted to promoting and protecting recreational fishing. He is a long-time Senior Writer specializing in conservation for B.A.S.S. Publications, and a Contributing Writer for Fishing Tackle Retailer Magazine. In addition, the Missouri native is a winner of the prestigious Homer Circle Fishing Communicator Award. He serves on the Board of Directors of Recycled Fish, a national conservation organization, and on the Conservation Pro Staff of Vanishing Paradise, a National Wildlife Federation initiative to restore Louisiana’s fish and waterfowl habitat by reconnecting the Mississippi River to the state’s wetlands. Robert has fished in Africa, South America, Central America, and throughout much of North America. He enjoys catching bluegill and crappie just as much as tarpon and sailfish. Well … nearly as much. He has caught—and released—more than a dozen 10-pound largemouth bass. Montgomery lives on a small lake in the eastern Ozarks with his dog Pippa.

What a great read!
By Teeg Stouffer
I have the honor of having been able to make a contribution to the book, so I'll be up front about that: maybe I'm biased.

But I suspect that I read more fishing literature than most folks, and I'll say that this book was one of the most fun things I've read in a long time; my own few pages aside. I loved the Dave Precht piece in the book, "Occasions for Hope." Dave has been the editor of BASSMASTER and BASS Times for years; today he's the VP of Editorial and Communications for BASS. He's such a great guy, and you can't help but feel that when you read his piece.

Bill Dance has been a pioneer in bass fishing, and his piece about why HE fishes is simple and easy to relate to, even for those of us who aren't in the Fishing Hall of Fame.

Dr. Bruce Condello's chapter our biological predisposition for fishing may be among my favorite entries in the book.

And Steve Chaconas wrote a piece on the friendships formed over the bow of a boat that made me a little misty. I felt like I knew him and his friend.

My friend Ben Leal's piece brings out the family aspect of fishing, and brings you some of the top names in our sport talking about the family roots that are running deep under why they fish.

And timely? There are even top quips from Facebook fans polled by Ross at Mystery Tackle Box. You'll steal a few of the lines, I'll bet.

I'm honored to have been able to chip in a few words about the faith aspect of fishing, because for many of us, that's interwoven with "Why We Fish." I know it is for me.

But it's Robert's work that glues all of this together. Some of it's light, some of it's serious. Some of it is education, all of it is good. There are only a small handful of Homer Circle Lifetime Achievement Award writers, and Robert is one of them. You'll see why when you read this book. Robert has fished all over the world - from South Africa to Central and South America and all over North America. But that doesn't matter when it comes to this book. What matters is that if you've ever picked up a rod, you'll be able to relate. Whether our fishing is confined to the county lake or includes waters across the globe, we have this common thread, and this book weaves that through stories that keep you turning the pages. Oh - and if you know someone who just doesn't "get" why you love fishing so much - give them a copy of this and they'll understand!

This is one of those books that you'll want to order two of, because by the time you finish, you'll know someone you'll want to give a copy to - but you won't be able to give up yours.

I found the book easy to read
By Deborah Hart
From the beginner to the Professional angler, Robert nails the reasons why we fish. I found the book easy to read, and very informative. As anglers we enjoy fishing for many different reasons but Robert helps the reader to understand that there is so much more to fishing, than just wetting a line. There are so many things that don't grab our attention in fishing, that without a full understanding we could possibly lose many of our rights as anglers. This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys fishing or just being out in the Great outdoors. Thanks Robert. 5-stars.
