About the Author

Professor Gould is the Ahlborg Professor of Construction Management at Roger Williams University where he serves as the director of the Construction Management Program.  He has over 20 years of teaching experience at the university level.  His expertise lies in the field of Construction Project Management, Estimating, Scheduling and Project Control.  He has authored two textbooks in these fields.   

 

In addition to his teaching, he actively consults in the field having worked with a wide range of public and private clients including the U.S. Air Force, Sears Roebuck, and NASA.  He has developed and taught numerous seminar and short courses in both public and in-house settings.  He has served as a seminar instructor for R.S. Means for over 15 years. 

 

He has served as the director for the Northeast region of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) an organization established for the purpose of supporting and disseminating construction knowledge.  He is also active in the American Council of Construction Education. (ACCE) where he has serves on the board of directors and as chair of the Guidance committee.  ACCE is the organization that accredits Construction Management Programs.  

 

Ms. Joyce has over 30 years experience in the design and construction industry with a concentration on academic and cultural environments.  She has served in the past in project management roles, focusing on teams, processes and strategic planning.   In the past five years, she has overseen the development of over $500 Million in higher education and museum programs, designs and construction.  She is presently working as a construction consultant on a large museum project in Canada.

A good introductory overview - but a little weak on real world applications

This book uniquely covered the traditional construction management subjects of estimating, scheduling, control, then added preconstruction activities and project delivery methods, followed by construction law and safety. These subject, which are integrated together in the work world, are usally found in 3-4 different books.

Some additional depth, such as adding order of magnitude estimating, and estimating by assemblies, was a welcome addition.

A little more "this is how it is really done in the real world" would have been helpful.Choosing Project Success - A Guide for Building Professionals

Good exposure to a lot of basic principles

This can give you a basic idea of what management is going to be like, and the tasks that will be necessary, but in all reality, a book isn't going to tell you how to do your job. If you have to buy this for coursework, I still don't know if I would consider buying it unless it's mandatory. Even then, you could just check it out from the library if they've got one or two on reserve. There isn't a whole lot in this book that isn't common sense, and there isn't a whole lot that will really get you anywhere if you're already a professional. I spent my money on it because I always bought all my books for my classes, but this is one of those books that I rarely opened before and I will probably never open it again.

This book was written by my old professor at wentworth institute of technology. Although he only gave me a B in the class i have to say the book was written very well ;). It is designed to give the reader important information of construction management in a very basic way. If you are a beginner in the construction business you can not go wrong with this book.

In North America's first major conflict, known today as the French and Indian War, France and England-both in alliance with Native American tribes-fought each other in a series of bloody battles and terrifying raids. No confrontation was more brutal and notorious than the massacre of the British garrison of Fort William Henry--an incident memorably depicted in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans. That atrocity stoked calls for revenge, and the tough young Major Robert Rogers and his "Rangers" were ordered north into enemy territory to take it. On the morning of October 4, 1759, they surprised the Abenaki Indian village of St. Francis, slaughtering its sleeping inhabitants without mercy. When the raiders returned to safety, they were hailed as heroes by the colonists, and their leader was immortalized as "the brave Major Rogers." But the Abenakis remembered Rogers differently: To them he was Wobomagonda--"White Devil."

War in the Woods

This book is a well-written overview of the contributions to warfare by Roger's Rangers and their attack on the Abenaki town of St. Francis in the fall of 1759. Brumwell explores the savage nature of the conflict between the English and the French and Indians, but underscores some of the ironic nature of this conflict: that due to kidnapping and tribal adoption, some St. Francis Indians were likely to have almost as many English ancestors as the frontiersmen they opposed. And that the English frontiersmen could be as "savage" as the Indians. Brumwell does very well dispelling the cliches and stereotypes that many have become accustomed to. He uses records of the St. Francis Indian oral tradition to give a voice to both sides. As an historian and former newspaperman, Dr. Brumwell writes very well and this is important because he creates both a well-researched historical work and a damn fine story. This is, after all, the story of Robert Rogers and is as good a biography of him as John Cuneo's older more traditional biography. As a result, this book can be read by both specialists and general readers alike and will carry the reader away 250 years where they can get lost in the woods.

NICELY DONE - WELL WRITTEN

I was impressed with this work from the first page. I admit to being one of those who, while aware of this period in our history, actually knew little of it and the impact it had on future events. What little I have read tended to be "soap box" history, that is, work that tried to make either the English or French or Native Americans into either saints or complete animals. This book gives us a rather different slant and pretty well makes the point that "times were hard then." I feel this work goes far in making an attempt to show all sides of the issue, both the good and bad of all the participants. If you are looking for a politically correct, "gosh what animals they were," then this one is probably not your cup of tea. Actually the author has not made any one side look all that nice and civilized. There has never been a war where atrocities were not committed. Further more, there has never been a war where the atrocities were not committed by all sides, to one extent or another. This war was no different. The work is well written and is apprently quite well researched. It is very readable. Recommned this one for any history buff and in particular for those interested in the early history of this country. Recommend you purchase and add this one to your collection.

We Are All Savages - By Bill Dixon

"Nous sommes tours Sauvages." So opens Stephen Brumwell's well-written adventure saga of the French & Indian War. I initially read it with some trepidation ,as many recently written books of the period tended to be of the politically correct, revisionist genre. Brumwell pleasantly surprised me with a very readable and balanced story. His inclusion of new and revealing Abenaki and French sources gave me a fresh perspective of Robert Rogers and the Rangers from the adversarial side of that conflict. He presented Roger's ,warts and all, without undue condemnation of his considerable leadership qualities. While not as broad in scope as John Cuneo's earlier biography of Rogers, Brumwell's scholarship and inclusion of new material and fair assessments make this a "keeper". Indeed, Brumwell's gripping and detailed description of the infamous St. Francis Raid and its aftermath was a vivid page-turner. Anyone with an interest in the colonial period in general and the French & Indian War in particular, will enjoy this book immensely.

Good, but old. Needs to be updated.

Those of us who participate in the CGI programming newsgroups know Thomas' reputation and it's steller. When this book was first released, it was the best book available, and it some ways it still is. But the current edition is showing its age. It doesn't cover many new CGI topics or concepts. I still use this book as a reference now and again, but I wouldn't buy it today.

a little out of date, but pretty good

I'd written many complex CGI scripts using Perl before even buying this book, and the concepts in it are sound and well explained. My purpose for this book was to make the difficult transition from PERL-based CGI programming to C-based CGI, and this book definitely served the purpose well. My only two complaints are: 1) There aren't enough code examples per chapter (remember what I bought the book for), and 2) The material is woefully out of date. Still, I haven't seen anything better at CGI using C out there, and I've been looking for a long time.

This book is NOT long-winded, but very practical. I have seen (repackaged???-or-similar)-versions of this code running on a few of the "higher-profile" web-sites. Over the years, I have acquired a STACK of other C-Programming Books--and I am afraid to buy any more of them--because I am tired of EXPERIMENTING to see which ones are PRACTICAL to READ, and I'm tired of reading GOBS of POINTLESS-and/or-BLOATED text--I am very happy with this book. I am a self-taught (Linux) C Programmer, and the C-and-PERL-programs from this book run well on Linux(kernels 2.2 thru 2.4)... This book is a great start in getting you up and running--but the rest is up to you--since you'll REALLY NEED to UNDERSTAND MODERN WEB SERVERS !!! ...and... ONE LAST NOTE-- this code may be considered "old" (written in 1996?) --it's NOT obsolete--but it still runs perfectly-and-flawlessly "as is" --on a modern-day Apache Web Server(Linux). This code has stood it's test of time. After you use these programs--it may become more obvious as to the "updates-additions-or-deletions" you'll want to make. Be sure to get Boutell's UPDATED CODE (from his web-site).

About the Author
Marty Brown is the author of the Power Supply Cookbook and Practical Switching Power Supply Design. He earned his amateur radio license at the age of 11 and has had electronics as a hobby throughout his life. He graduated cum laude from Drexel University in 1974. His electronic design history includes underwater acoustics with the department of the Navy, airborne weather radar design (digital and SMPS), a satellite CODEC, and process control equipment. He was previously with Motorola Semiconductor as a principle application engineer, where he defined more than eight semiconductor products in the power conversion market and received two patents. He later started his own electronics consulting firm where he designed products from satellite power systems to power-related integrated circuits for many semiconductor companies. He is presently working in the field of digitally-controlled power supplies with Microchip Technologies. He has eight children, five of whom are adopted. His wife is an internationally known writer and speaker in the area of inter-racial adoption and related issues. He presently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Best GED Prep Book Around!

I got this book for my nephew who opted to take this test versus finishing his senior year of high school. He asked for my help with the math, but having been out of school for several years and not knowing specifically what type of math is on this test, I hoped to find a book with some specifics. I reviewed every section of this book and I was impressed with how well it organized the information and provided examples. I was grateful to receive this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
To start, this book has an excellent introduction. It explains what the GED test is, how the test is administered, what all the sections/topics are, how many questions are in each section and how much time is allotted for each section. They also explain how the test is scored. The Sections are as follows: Math, Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The last section of this book includes Practice tests for each section and answer keys; an added plus.
Each section is broken down into sub-sections sand those sections are broken down even further. Each sub-section includes plenty of examples to understand the subject matter. I highly recommend this book for anyone tackling this test. I don’t think there is another book around that could present this information in a better format.

I wasn't sure about this study guide because it was really cheap. However, this book was really helpful. It covers all the core subjects and is really clearly laid out. Also has lots of practice. I'm taking the GED next month and I believe I will pass it thanks to this book.

I will admit that I am not actually planning on taking this test myself, rather I picked this up as a form of self education and entertainment for the many road trips and long distance drives my family takes. Yeah, I call test taking FUN and entertaining haha :) that said, about the study guide...

It has a nice and easy layout with all of the core subjects covered that you would expect to find on the official GED test. Language arts, math, science and social studies. This is a fantastic overview of what to expect as well as a nice refresher if you're like me and looking to pass some time without a screen!

I tried to provide as many photos of the details as I could because honestly when I look at reviews I first go to the photos to see the real life image of the item as I have found sometimes the stock photos can misrepresent what you're buying.

About the Author
Junot Díaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Drown; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; and This Is How You Lose Her, a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist. He is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and PEN/O. Henry Award. A graduate of Rutgers College, Díaz is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and the Rudge and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ouch [or equivalent 4 syllable synonym]

This was my first foray into Junot Diaz and it was as painful as the title suggests. It's also pretty self referential which also stings.

Junior's relationships with the women in his life is a giant billboard for how people get trapped in the grooves and struggle to change in spite of their desire to do so. There's also an element of the external witness who sees Yunior's train coming vs. the internal Yunior who wanders along looking only at the tracks. He's always surprised each time he gets hit.

I really loved reading this book. There are some really funny laugh out loud moments and quite a lot of times I was sucking air through my teeth hoping for a different outcome and knowing it wouldn't change.

The book is also beautifully crafted with sharp, sharp descriptive and beautiful images of the world Yunior inhabits. I especially loved the descriptions of the women in Yuniors' life but all of the other characters, in particular his brother, are alive with depth.

I struggled with the Spanish along the way and ended up using google translate on my phone to read my iPad which worked well. Understanding the Spanish added a lot so I recommend taking the time to do that.

I'm looking forward to reading more Junot Diaz. Thank you as always to my friend for the recommendation.
