About the Author
Janet Garman raises chickens and many other farm animals on their family homestead in Maryland. She and her husband have raised their family and grown their farm while running a family business, being a farm store owner, and teaching chicken-care classes in the community. Janet holds a degree in animal science, concentrating on farm animal management after having spent time working as a paralegal and a retail store owner. Now retired from the retail life, Janet is using her time to improve her website and blog, spend more time with the animals and farm, can produce, and learn to be more self-sufficient. Her most important dream is to encourage others to take small steps to be more self-sufficient where ever they live.

Great “Go-to-Guide” for anyone interested in starting and raising backyard chickens!

Great “Go-to-Guide” for anyone interested in starting and raising backyard chickens! Highly recommend having this Quick-Reference book to keep at hand rather than going to the internet, or more lengthy textbooks. Although the author states her “book may not be the longest book ever written on chicken care,” it provides all the simple and straightforward answers needed to successfully raise and care for your baby chicks, hens, and roosters. I was particularly impressed with the many suggestions on how to prevent disease and how to prevent predators from destroying your carefully cared for chickens. I would recommend this book to a friend as the only guide you need to start your own flock of chicks!

It is written on a level aimed more at a grade school - junior high level than the description leads you to believe. It reads like a 4-H manual than a book. If you have even a tiny bit of experience with poultry, this book will be of no value to you, unless you want to read it to children to introduce them to backyard chickens.

The author (Janet Garmen) has a degree in animal science, is a retired feed store owner, and raised her family on their own family farm, so she writes from years of experience with chickens. She’s taught classes to help countless customers successfully get started with them, and has distilled her knowledge into one compact, fact-filled book.

It’s not an encyclopedia on chickens, but contains all the information to do exactly what the subtitle, Raising Your Own Chickens From Hatch To Egg Laying And Beyond, suggests. From caring for new chicks, to managing layers, and dealing with spent hens, it covers what new chicken-keepers need to know for success.

It covers how many chickens to start with, what breed, roosters, housing, illness, feeding, and the details that only an experienced chicken-keeper knows to cover. At 68 pages, it’s an easy read and it includes photographs on many of the subjects.

I was impressed at how much information is packed into this book, and think that it would make an excellent starter book for new chicken-keepers. It’ll be a welcome addition to any homesteader or chicken lovers library and a really thoughtful gift. I'm happy that it's in my library now!

About the Author

Bardo Fassbender is Professor of International Law at the Bundeswehr University in Munich. He studied at the University of Bonn and holds an LL.M from Yale Law School and a Doctor iuris from the Humboldt University in Berlin. Before joining the Bundeswehr University, he taught in Berlin, St Gallen, and Munich (Ludwig Maximilians University). His principal fields of research are international law, United Nations law, German constitutional law, comparative constitutional law and theory, and the history of international and constitutional law. Among his many publications are the books UN Security Council and the Right of Veto: A Constitutional Perspective (The Hague/London/Boston, 1998), Der offene Bundesstaat: Studien zur auswartigen Gewalt und zur Volkerrechtssubjektivitat bundesstaatlicher Teilstaaten in Europa (Tubingen, 2007), and The United Nations Charter as the Constitution of the International Community (Leiden/Boston, 2009).

A book I've been waiting for!

I've been a fan of Long John Baldry's music since the 1970's and have always wanted to know more about him. The small amount of information available from CD inserts only made him more intriguing. Baldry had a posh accent but could growl the blues with the passion of Leadbelly, and seemed to be at the epicenter of the British Blues movement. He was not only one of the most versatile singers ever, but he gave Rod Stewart and Elton John their start, and they returned the favor by producing and performing on several Baldry albums.

The author, Paul Myers, obviously understands and has a great love for music and a deep knowledge of how it all connects. He captures Baldry's fascinating story in an engaging and compelling way with an economy of words--no sycophantic slobbering or speculation--and a very visual sense. I would love to see the documentary by Nick Orchard which is mentioned in the book (Myers wrote the documentary too, obviously a perfect choice!) because growing up in the states, I was never able to see Baldry's amazing tv performances other than via Youtube clips. I hope the documentary will be released at some point, but until then, this book more than fits the bill.

You don't even need to know Long John Baldry's music to enjoy this book, although after you read it you will be seeking out his songs. People are still discovering what a great artist he was!

yes to this book
By Love a good mystery
This is a journalistic approach to a biography. Normally I would find the this style of writing a bit dry. Not so this book. I was drawn in from the beginning.
long John Baldry's place in the history of the blues was an unknown to me. After reading 'It Ain't Easy ' I feel a lost at having missed out on an opportunity to experience this talented and colorful man first hand.
No matter where you stand in the continuum of music ,starting in the mid 20th century ,this story is a significant piece of that history not only for his place in it as a musician but as a person generous of spirit who shared of his talent by recognizing and mentoring new talent.

About the Author
Melody Beattie is the author of numerous best-selling books, including Codependent No More, Beyond Codependency, The Language of Letting Go, More Langauge of Letting Go, and 52 Weeks of Conscious Contact. Her first book, Codependent No More, was published by Hazelden in 1986. Melody's compassionate and insightful look into codependency--the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another--struck a universal chord among families struggling with a loved one's addiction or other life issues. Lots of info to digest and think through

I chose this book to review because this subject is very personal to me. Without going into too much detail, I have a family member that has an addiction. It has been a very trying time for me over the past year. I actually own the original book CODEPENDENT NO MORE but I haven't opened it yet. However, when this book was offered to me I realized that some good would come out of me reading it.

Going to a 12 step program such as Al-Anon, Nar-Anon or Codependents Anonymous is something the book highly recommends. The format of the book is shaped around the 12 steps of Codependents Anonymous with each chapter going into detail about a step or two. The steps are similar to those in other 12 step programs with slight adaptations to fit Codependents. Each chapter has exercises and activities to make sure the reader understands the steps discussed. Since it can take months or even years to move past certain steps, it can be a while before the book is finished. However taking as much time as it needs to come to this understanding is beneficial to find healing.

There are some places where I am in disagreement with the author. I'm not sure if this is because of my faith vs. the theory but several times I felt that I could not agree with Beattie. I completely understand the need that I need to focus on myself and reevaluate how I am acting and thinking. Maybe I just read it wrong or I'm not completely understanding but there were times when I felt that it seemed that the addict or whoever is causing you to be codependent was not at fault and you were. To worry or even think about them at all seemed to be wrong. It's said that you might even need to completely cut them out of your life in order to make yourself better. The thing with that is that even if you DO cut them out completely and never see or talk to them again, you'll still think about them. To completely have absolutely no feeling for them is impossible or at least it is for me. Still it's a good thing because it makes you think a lot and helps you to reevaluate how you have been living your life.

While I feel that the info in this book is very valuable and highly informative, as a workbook it fell flat for me. When I think of a workbook, I expect to be able to write IN the actual book. If an exercise called for jotting down thoughts or creating a list, I would expect to see actual space and lines in the book to write in. I also would have like a questionnaire or a survey to take to evaluate how you were before starting to read the book. Unfortunately this workbook contains none of that. Anytime there is an activity that calls for writing, the reader is expected to write in an external journal. I don't like that because that seems to defeat the entire purpose of a workbook. It means having to keep up with an extra item and seems pointless. I would want to keep everything together and in the future having to keep referring back and forth between two books would be confusing especially if you lose one. Therefore while the information is greatly useful, the actual setup of the workbook failed.

This is a book not to be rushed through. I read it pretty quickly to finish it in time for the tour but it's a book that I will be going back through again more slowly to make sure that everything sinks in. I found that I have been doing a lot of stuff already that the book mentioned prior to reading the book but there is still more that I need to learn and practice. Regardless of any criticism I've had in this review, please note that I'm not in denial about any codependency issues that I have. It is something that I have to work on in my life and pray that healing and hope will come my way.

I purchased this as a companion to her book, "Codependent No More." It was definitely a book from GOD! It is helping me so much and I've had it less than a week.
Anyone with addicts in their family or close circle of friends owes it to themselves to read this and her other book as well.
It will answer questions you didn't realize you had.
VERY HELPFUL AND HEALING!!

Great Workbook for Codependency

After I fell apart after a relationship, I found out i was codependent. This book really helps to explain the whys of the illness. There was a lot there that really sounded like they were talking about me in my situation. Great stuff.

About the Author
Thomas O. Hueglin is Professor of Political Science at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. He has published widely on federalism and the history of political thought. He has also served as UN adviser to the Constitutional Drafting Commission of the Republic of Yemen.


Alan Fenna is Professor of Politics at the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy, Curtin University, Western Australia. He is the author of a range of journal articles, book chapters, and reports on economic policy, social policy, constitutional issues, and federalism.

Awesome! Everyone should read this book!

I am only halfway through the book and wish I would have read it much sooner. Everyone should read this book! I am an RN who has known for many years that if I explain the rationale behind why I recommend something to a patient, the more likely they are to adhere to it. If, for example, I want a patient to get up and walk after surgery and I told them "Your goal today should be to get up and walk" without any explanation, the patient is more likely to procrastinate about it all day dwelling on the pain and discomfort they feel from surgery. On the other hand, if I tell them that the goal will be to walk today because by just that one action they will be preventing pneumonia and blood clots, promoting circulation which promotes healing, preventing muscle atrophy, skin breakdown and ileus ( a twisting of the intestine which can sometimes be a problem for patient's who are not moving around much after receiving anesthesia), and that we will control their pain with medications in the beginning to get them over the hump, they are going to be more likely to walk not only once but maybe two or three times! Larina Kase does the exact same thing with how we think and make decisions in work and life. It now makes sense why I keep falling into the same habits even though they hold me back. Not only does she answer WHY we come to certain decisions but also HOW to change our thought patterns to make those decisions more effective, thus achieving greater success in life. This information is not just important for our business success but can be applied to any aspect of our life. This is the next best thing to her personally coaching you. A Powerful Perspective

I highly recommend this book. In it, Dr. Larina Kase reveals a powerful perspective on how we develop and what contributes to success in our lives and in our work. Weaving together stories from her clients with psychological research, Larina helps us see our own tendencies objectively. She explains that in a situation where you are reaching beyond what you have done before, natural discomfort arises in your experience. What we do with that discomfort or anxiety, is a key factor in how much we flourish in life. In my opinion, this objective perspective and insight is a gift, because it liberates our potential to change how we respond and grow. Where before we may have semi-consciously shied away or defended ourselves from this natural discomfort (in a myriad of ways detailed in the book), now we know how to interpret the experience differently. And Larina also lays out a simple, yet comprehensive system of development, or "GROWTH" process that enables us to change.

Not only is the perspective powerful, but Larina takes care to help us immediately take action--for each insight revealed in the book, she gives us action steps. To top it off, the book is full of interviews with experts who have demonstrated the effectiveness of the growth mindset in their own lives. Sharing their insights on the subject matter fills out the book and makes it a rich resource that I will keep coming back to again and again.

Misleading title - not just for "leaders"

I almost didn't order this book because the word "Leader" didn't particularly resonate with me. But I really liked Dr. Kase's other book, The Confident Speaker, so I decided to give this one a try. After glancing at the table of contents, it became clear to me that this book is for ANYONE who wants to grow. I liked that the book looks at the person as a whole and recognizes that everyone (including the most successful) has habits, fears, and beliefs that keep them from succeeding even more. I am impressed not only by the breadth of techniques the book covers, but by the clear, systematic, and well-defined action steps that walk you through fighting the usual things that keep us from being "exceptional".

I am always looking for ways to grow myself, my business, and inspire my clients - this is a book I would definitely recommend.
