The book is good, but get the Q-bank too. It's a must.

The book is an excellent resource covering all the subjects appearing on the Series 65 exam. The exam covers a lot of territory and the book does a good job of organizing the material and presenting it clearly. Tips, alerts and quizzes are interspersed throughout the chapters and, not surprisingly, do a good job of highlighting the issues that the actual test tends to focus on. Each chapter also has a review exam at the end of the chapter. As mentioned in other reviews, using only this book will make the task of passing the test far more challenging than it needs to be. It's probably best to use the book in conjunction with the Q-bank which is sold separately. It can be bought straight from Kaplan. Once the basic material in the book is read, using the Q-bank to reinforce the concepts, see the tricks and focus your follow up to specific subjects is the real key to passing the test. After reading the book, I took a full length weighted mock exam everyday for two weeks. Any topic that I didn't understand or recall well, I'd review the book. Any question, I got wrong, the Q-bank provided rationale for the correct answer. My scores where in the low to mid 80s from the get go using the book, but most of the non-regulatory material was familiar to me. By the second week, the scores were more like 90. The practice tests did a good job of predicting the actual results and within the first 20 questions or so, I knew that all I had to do was take my time, work through the problems and keep my cool. The combo of the book and Q-bank took the stress away. Final score 93.

Serves its purpose

This is a good book that covers every topic in depth. The writing is pretty dry, and in a few isolated spots isn't worded as clearly as one would like, but for the most part it's very clear to read. There's no fluff, just the facts; if they threw in fluff the book would be over 1,000 pages...It is more interesting than reading actual laws from a book of laws. With the amount of content you need, you'll just want the facts. My favorite thing about this book is that though dry, every 100 pages they do throw in a hilarious sarcastic comment, such as, "For those too lazy to access EDGAR..." This book is an excellent tool for your preparation for the series 65 exam, but it must be accompanied with another study source so that you are taking in a sufficient number of practice tests." It's apparent that Kaplan has a pulse on what is tested; they've been in this type of business for years, so it's a source where you know you're getting quality, relevant study material.

Update: I got an 81 on the exam. I read the text and took the text unit exams; also unit by unit, I did Kaplan QBank Unit tests till I got an 80, then moved to the next Unit. After the text was completed, I did 6 simulated exams. The Kaplan QBank simulated tests scores were exactly what I got on the real exam. Don't waste your money on the practice test; although they say it is most like the actual exam, they don't give you the answers after the practice test, so it's really pretty useless - you can't see what you got wrong. The simulated QBank tests scores are a far good enough indicator on whether you're ready for the exam. Make sure you take at least 4 simulated exams to be sure you're ready, because there are a lot of types of questions. Make sure you're scoring at least 80 on your sims, you don't want to cut it close, and risk repaying for the exam.

Previous Favorable Amazon reviews were the reason I decided to use Kaplan. The common denominator in what other reviewers and myself have found to be the key to passing the exam is the fantastic 3000+ Q-Bank. The Learning Exam Manual (LEM) is filled with in chapter quizzes, end of chapter tests, and notes and test topic alerts throughout that really prepare you for the exam. I found by reviewing all the test topic alerts and doing several simulated tests you will be fully prepared. I scored between 83-86 on all my practice exams at the end, and I scored 84 on my license exam. They do a great job putting everything together. If you want to learn the materials in a practical manner and pass the exam, I would highly recommend this Manual and the Q-Bank

Same book, different title?

I had already bought Ms. Howe's "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane" and thoroughly enjoyed it. so when I saw this title I thought it would be a continuation of the story or perhaps a prequel to the "Physick Book." Imagine my surprise when, after receiving "The Lost Book of Salem," I discovered that it is the exact same book (The Physick Book . . . ) but with a different title! This fact wasn't mentioned on any site that I could find where the book was offered for sale..

Very disappointing. I could have bought another of Ms. Howe's books (or another author's works) instead of duplicating what I already had.

I would give the story 5 stars but the questionable practice of offering the same book under two different titles, zero!

Like The Ghost Lady previously wrote, I was very unpleasantly surprised to find this is the same book as her Deliverance Dane book, just with a different name. It seems this is the UK version. I am extremely unhappy with Amazon for allowing this. I just wish Ghost Lady's review had been only a few days sooner so I could have seen it before ordering this book. Huge thumbs down for Amazon on this purchase. Amazon should be the one informing the public about this title.

The Lost Book of Salem was a very interesting book that ties the Salem Witch trials to the present time. It was also extremely fascinating to learn that the author herself was related to someone from the Witch Trials. It is a great book to read if you are interested in the Witch Trials and a little bit of magic.

Useful, but with a STEEP learning curve

I have taught electromagnetism at the advanced graduate level, and am reasonably familiar with classical differential geometry and general relativity (e.g. as presented by Weinberg). I am finding Ludvigsen's book a tough read, though a worthwhile one. A considerable amount both of the physics background and the mathematics background of the subject is omitted or treated very briefly. Three paragraphs cover the Coulomb potential *and* the plane wave, for instance. Definitions tend to be ostentive - by example.
Ludvigsen's book has the virtues of brevity as well as its difficulties, however: the reader can see where he is going at all times, and the author takes the reader through the modern approach to differential geometry, and deeply into the results of relativity theory, quickly and efficiently.
I hope to see a second edition of this book. A little more explanantion, here and there, would do much, if not to reduce the steepness of the learning curve, at least to provide a few handholds on the way up!

There are endorsements on the back of this from Roger Penrose and Bernhard Schutz. The two neatly parenthesise the problem with this book, which is that in order to follow it, you need first to read Schutz's 'Geometrical methods', but once you have read Schulz you can skip Ludwigsen, and have a crack at Penrose (or, more reasonably, Wald) instead.
This should be a nice book (and Roger's blurb is probably earned - but Rog is not the audience). The author is enchanted - understandably - by the beauty of both relativity and differential geometry, but he tries to do too much in the number of pages he has, forgetting that mathematical ladders are much less intimidating looking down than looking up.

A book twice as long would take half the time to read.

A good book (in particular, for students)

This is a good book, with a pronounced mathematical accent and many useful and solvable problems. It can be considered as a textbook, though there are some points which deserve corrections, for example: (a) In p. 36, the Author characterized the Lorentz transformation too shortly, and he calls it "Lorenz transformation". This is especially strange since in the neighbouring Denmark (Ludvigsen's address in the book is in Sweden) there was a great physicist L.V. Lorenz, 1829-1891, inventor of the Lorenz condition, creator of the electromagnetic theory of light (1867, independently of Maxwell), and co-author of the famous Lorenz-Lorentz formula -- together with H.A. Lorentz of Holland to whom pertains the above transformation. Eight lines below Ludvigsen introduces "Levi-Cevita" tensor (named after T. Levi-Civita, and this is a pseudo-tensor = axial tensor). These errors are not misprints (see Index, p. 216, and the text in the pages given there). (b) The Author uses, of course, real coordinates (not the ancient imaginary time), so it is inadequate to picture the Lorentz transformation as a sheer trigonometric rotation of space-time axes (cf. figs. 4.7, 5.3). (c) In the very title of the book the subtitle ("A Geometric Approach") seems to be artificial since general relativity practically is a synonym of geometry: the well-proportioned abundance of figures in the book is not identical to geometry. Imagine that Euclid would entitle his books as "The Elements. A Geometric Approach"... But the book by Ludvigsen is definitely a success, though it needs some editing more. I highly recommend it to students.

Beautifully illustrated, lovely story!

My 1.5 year old daughter (we call her Wild Clementine) is utterly enraptured with this book. We read it at least 5 times a day - sometimes I have to hide it just to get a break to go do other things, because when we get started it's constantly "again, again" - one day when she was sick, we read it over 30 times! :O The illustrations are beautiful.

There lives in every child an animal. A wild, untamable creature that will emerge without fail at the worst possible moments, rendering its parents helpless and hopeless all in one swoop. There also exist in this world picture books that touch on this restrained/free duality. You might even argue that the BEST children’s books touch on this in some way ("Where the Wild Things Are” being the most obvious example). In 2013 alone we saw Peter Brown’s “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild” talk about the need in every child for order as well as wild uninhibited freedom. “Wild”, in contrast, is a simpler story. Following just one girl from her path from nature to the city and back again, it has a different lesson in mind. It is all well and good for some to find a happy medium between chaos and order but for some kids chaos is clearly MUCH more appealing!

“No one remembered how she came to the woods, but all knew it was right.” A green-haired baby smiles contentedly on a forest floor as a bear, bird, and fox look on. Over the years the bird teaches her to speak, the bear to eat, and the fox to play. Unfortunately a hunter’s trap catches the child by her foliage-like hair and a pair of baffled hunters takes her back with them to civilization. There the child is forced to reside in the home of a well-meaning psychiatrist and his wife. Attempts to normalize her fail resoundingly and at last she flees back to the wild, the family dog and cat in tow. After all, “you cannot tame something so happily wild.”

A British-born Hawaiian-residing author/illustrator, Emily Hughes’ art is fascinating to look at, partly because it’s so incredibly European. It’s something about the eyes, I think. Or maybe just the way the landscape and the animals intertwine. The bears, for example, reminded me of nothing so much as the ones found in “The Bear’s Song” by Benjamin Chaud (a Frenchman). The heroine herself is somehow big-eyed without devolving into preciousness (a delicate balance). Her plant-like hair almost looks like it might be sentient at times. People in general are rendered with a fine hand. My favorite shot is of the wild child being brought to civilization by the two clearly shell-shocked hunters. As the men, and even their dog, drive in the rain, their eyes ringed with worry, the child sits on the front seat with only her eyes visible over the dash. She is clearly silent and livid.

It’s interesting to look at the settings and colors in the book as well. As the girl is raised there isn’t a white page to be seen until the last fateful line of “And she understood, and was happy.” Then, when humanity intervenes, the white pages begin to proliferate. Interior spreads are either grey/green or peach/brown and nothing else. It’s as much a relief to the reader’s eye as it is the child’s spirit when she escapes again into the wild. I was particularly pleased too with the two-page wordless humanless spread displaying only the child’s wanton path of destruction. As for the wild itself, here we have a utopian Eden, where animals might eat the occasional fish but never a green-haired baby child. Or, for that matter, one another.

One quibble I have with the book is the final line. It ends on an ellipsis, you see. Now I’m as big a fan of your average everyday ellipses as the next gal. And I understand that there must have been long editorial discussions with the author/illustrator that justified its presence on the last page. I just have absolutely no idea what those justifications could possibly be. The line reads, “Because you cannot tame something so happily wild…” Maybe the dot dot dot is there to suggest that this isn’t the end of the story? I haven't a better idea.

Oh, they’ll tag this as an eco-centric morality tale, I’m sure. Wild/nature = good, civilization/standardization = bad. That sort of thing. Honestly, I think it has a lot more to say about the inner life of a young child than any overt messagey message about Mother Earth. But there aren’t any rules governing how you use a book, so go on! Use it to talk to kids about nature and the outdoors. Use it to talk about acceptable and non-acceptable behavior and when those rules break down. Use it to discuss tropes most common in European vs. American books, or what makes this book a stand out in its field. Talk about it any old way you like, but make sure you talk about it. A surprisingly lovely little piece that bears similarities to hundreds of pictures books out there, but isn’t really like a single one. One of a kind.
