Why had it seen fit to summon this young African girl, scarcely eighteen years old, before it?” This group of ‘the most respectable Characters in Boston,’ as it would later define itself, had assembled to question closely the African adolescent on the slender sheaf of poems that she claimed to have ‘written by herself.’” This young “African girl” was Phillis Wheatley. “The Trial of Phillis Wheatley” is a courtroom drama because it “depicts” what happened in the Governor’s Council Chamber room that day. However, as important as she is to our history and to the drama, the play is not just about Phillis. The play is also about the men in that room and the test that they were facing. The test of overcoming their own prejudices to be willing to put their signature on a document attesting that this African household slave of John and Susannah Wheatley had written a number of poems compiled in a small manuscript. A Negro slave author was a phenomenon that was unique to these men, to Boston, and to a young America. Only if the largely older and all white men in that room were willing to put their names to this attestation would this manuscript have a chance of being published. The consequences of this action for these men were possible ridicule, and the threat of physical violence from an external force, the Boston gang, under the leadership of Ebenezer Mackintosh, street brawler and charismatic leader of the South End Gang. Ronald Wheatley is the author of the award winning historical novel "A Song of Africa," that was inspired by his experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nigeria, West Africa. He is an attorney and student of history and a member of the Massachusetts Sons of the American Revolution. He served in Vietnam with the US Army's 1st Signal Brigade, 1967-1968.

New View on Life

I am 21 years old, and I was never a reader. All throughout high school I refused to read books for pleasure, I even refused to read the mandatory reading assignments. Also, I never made it past my first semester of college. However, I recently picked this book up out of curiosity. This book has totally changed my view on literature and value of education. Instead of coming home after work and sitting down and watching movie after movie, my new desire is to read a good book. Thankfully, "The Trial of Phillis Wheatley", has turned that routine around for me. Now, I want to read more often than watch television, I now want to read more to further my knowledge on subjects like history. I recommend this book to everyone, readers or not. Thank You Ronald Wheatley for this beautiful piece of art.

Must read historical book

The story of Phyllis Wheatley is presented by the author in a theatrical manner that made me feel as though I was actually present when Phyllis was challenged to prove the authorship of her poems because of her race. I became totally immersed in the issues of the times experiencing the tension of blacks verses whites, England verses America and the Colonial debates over British rule, abolition and taxation. Remarkably the Wheatley family did not treat Phyllis as a slave rather, they recognized and nurtured her talent and provided unprecedented education in literature. Without their generosity of spirit and the support of one of our Founding Fathers, John Hancock, America would not have been gifted with talents of our country’s first published black poet. I heartily recommend this book. The story was riveting, the writing artful, and the reader was left desiring more. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

An Amazing Woman

Ronald Wheatley takes readers back before the American Revolution to introduce us to a young woman slave, who is both genius and poet. I had not heard of her and was so pleased to read about the first published African American woman poet. Through his characters, Wheatley's book expresses both British as well as American viewpoints and his writing reveals the delicate, worried emotions of the soft spoken slave. The author gives lots of data about those turbulent times before the play begins.

A Non-fiction page turner

Brother Guy Conssolmagno has exceeded his presentation of the synthesis of religion and science he began in Brother AstronomerBrother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist. In his presentation of believing in God and religion Consolmagno claims to be taking a techie point of view. He defines a techie as someone whose world view pragmatic, logical and functional. Techies want to know how things work. It is this attitude that gives them an understanding of God as "all modern science developed precisely because the medievals believed in a creator God,and thus they had the confidence to assume that this apparently chaotic universe did make sense (and was worthy of study)." On the matter of religion, he likens it to the scientific community which through peer review of experimental results leads to a better understanding of the world. His chapters specifically directed to his Roman Catholic religion (he is a Jesuit) apply to almost any main stream catholic, orthodox or protestant organization because it deals with his humanity and how that requires him to deal with other humans, God, and his creation. Consolmagno raises points of disagreement, but explains his position in a clear enough manner that you can argue with him, which makes the book fun as well as enlightening. His easy to read style and clear presentation of ideas make this book a page turner even if it is non-fiction.

This book is a great addition to an increasingly number of books written by respected scientists/engineers about why and how belief in God makes sense. Francis Collins' "Language of God" falls into the "why" cathegory. If you wanna challenge your Dawkins-minded friends, that's probably your best guide. Now, if you want to have a deep look about how a techie, Brother Consolmagno, makes sense of being a Roman Catholic, then this is definitely your book. In that sense, "God's Mechanics" is a very different book from "Language of God". Consolmagno isn't trying to be an apologetic of Christianity but rather he unapologetically gives you his reasons why he is a Roman Catholic. The way he writes, and jokes, is likely to resonate more with techies/geeks than with fundamental religious types but that's what he intended in the first place. Enjoy the read!

Nice Guys Finish First

Every once in a great while a person enters this world who truly makes a difference. Axel is such a person - generous, brilliant, cultured and admired. He works very hard and has endless passion for life and for the joys of his life. This book is a glimpse into what Axel does, into what he lives for. As you read this book and marvel at what heights of artistry, inspiration, then continue on to Axel's web site, at axel-vervoordt.com. You might even be moved to travel to s'Gravenwezel, northeast of Antwerpen, and visit the world he is building there since the mid 60's. It's a wonderful book about a wonderful person.

I fell in love with the movie and the book gave some more insight into these fascinating characters!!! A MUST see film, who did an amazing job writing and directing this film, he's just phenomenal!! And Nancy Holder just added that special insight into this story!!! Thank you for a ghost story that will be hard to let go for some time....

Read first the book, watched the movie later. The book is better at creating the atmosphere and actually giving some volume to the characters. The movie was a disappointment after reading the book, so I think this was a great literary exercise. Entertaining and with great pace.
