Conversational English can be challenging.

This book has a unique way of introducing and repeating basic conversational English. However, at times I wonder about the word choice of the author. My students seem to appreciate the translations that are imbedded in the text and it makes them feel more comfortable learning English. The repetition is frequent and allows for numerous practice opportunities of targeted vocabulary. It is easy for the teacher to adapt additional vocabulary when necessary although plenty is provided. The cost of the book makes it affordable for my students and that is a plus.

Excellent Book!

I've been giving a helping hand to a lovely, hard-working couple here in Baja that own a small business. They have also lived in the U.S. for a number of years - and they do speak English (he more than his wife) but have problems with grammar, spelling and punctuation and want to expand their vocabulary. The business requires that they deal with many foreigners on a daily basis - including the need to open accounts and write e-mails to respond to questions. The written word is a real stumbling block. This book will help to be able to read in English with the exact translation in Spanish. I also ordered Painless Grammar (Barron's Painless Series) which is an excellent book for someone reasonably versed in English but needing help in writing, punctuation, to cap or not to cap a letter, etc. They make a great companion!

¡Buena referencia visual a las conjugaciones gramaticales!

¡Este es un libro básico que debes tener en tu biblioteca personal! Es ligero y lo puedes llevar a todas partes contigo. Como su título lo dice te presenta todas o la mayoría de las conjugaciones en oraciones que te permiten rápidamente incorporarlas en tu discurso diario (escrito o verbal). Lamentablemente no viene con audio para corregir la pronunciación pero está muy completo en las conjugaciones de los tiempos que las personas reales utilizamos no solo tiempos presente, pasado y futuro! Ejemplo: Yo pude haberlo hecho - " I could have done it" ¡Y muchos más!
Yo conocí este libro en México pero nunca lo valoré tanto hasta que me di cuenta que no podía expresarme en inglés. con la misma confianza y complejidad con la que lo hacía en español ¡Hay muchos libros que te muestran la gramática y varias conjugaciones complejas pero no lo hacen de manera clara o concisa y este libro sí! Todo el contenido está organizado en esquemas o graficas sencillas y viene con traducciones en la versión afirmativa y negativa de la primera forma del singular y en la tercera persona del singular con varios ejemplos. ¡Lo más importante es que comienza con las conjugaciones elementales y termina con las más avanzadas sin dejarte dudas!

Atoms and Molecules - The Single Best Reference

I agree with the review of this text given by Robert Brown of Duke University. This text is the most comprehensive, complete and well-written single refernce on atomic and molecular theory that I ever worked with. Although I am not currently publishing in the field, I used it as a graduate student and later for extensive research in computational atomic physics.
It should be republished as soon as possible (Dover, are you listening?) - I, too, cannot believe that it is out of print and so hard to find. I am dying for the original hard copy, which seems to be impossible to find.
Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the book is that it presents an integrated account of angular momentum and other methods of atomic physics that is readable without "swamping" the reader with details and obscure notation. It also presents an excellent bridge between undergraduate quantum theory and relativistic quantum physics. Furthermore, it is an outstanding introduction for those wishing to do serious computational atomic or molecular physics. It does not "dumb down" the physics or mathematics for computational experts and provides a good grounding for those going on to specialize in the area.

Atoms and Molecules as an intro to quantum theory

I can't believe that this book is out of print -- it is a classic.
Quantum Theory is difficult to learn under the best of conditions and with multiple books. Atoms and Molecules is an encyclopediac text on basic quantum theory through what I'd call advanced intermediate level quantum theory, clearly enough written for an undergraduate junior or senior physics major but intended for a graduate student in physics or quantum chemistry.
It has lovely presentations of basic quantum results, angular momentum theory in full detail, perturbation theory, and the basis of quantum chemistry. The first 2/3 of the book are great for physics students. The last 1/3 is more for quantum chemists or physics students interested in molecular and structural physics.
Anyway, all I can say is rats! I'm gonna have to see if I can find a used copy myself. It is an excellent reference and resource for teaching quantum theory and doing theoretical (quantum) physics research, and the library finally took the copy I'd had out for years back!

Excellent book!

This book is fantastically written; clear and concise with very few words, yet it somehow makes sense and remains thorough. I have never found a book that conveys this quantity and quality of information so thoroughly in such a small number of pages. This book completes what I consider the holy trinity for the beginning graduate quauntum chemist: Atoms and Molecues by Weissbluth, Quantum Chemistry by Ira Levine, and Modern Quantum Chemistry: Introduction to Advanced Electronic Structure Theory by Szabo and Ostlund.

For the complete beginner, I recommend reading the first 8 or 9 chapters of Levine first, and taking time to digest them entirely. From there, a student can either finish Levine, read this book, or read Szabo and Ostlund. These three steps can be done in any order or all at the same time as I am doing now. This book brings Levine's book full circle in an elegant sort of a way, shortening concepts and summoning countless "aha" moments.

I have never felt quite as confident as I do now in my capacity to utterly comprehend quantum chemistry. Now I have found the missing link. These three books complement each other so well. Whenever I hit an obstacle in one book where I feel confused, I reference one of the other two books and pass through the obstacle as if through water, as if through air. Do not get overwhelmed if you are a complete beginner. There is a hump that you have to get over, but once you get over it, the process gets easier. The hump entails building a solid foundation upon which build further. The hump also entails being aware of the structure of the three books; how they are written, in what order specific concepts are presented, which formulas are most useful and where they are located, etc. For example, as you read the first chapter of this book, it is useful to have completely read and understood chapter 5 of Levine's book, because you can understand chapter 1 of this book much more quickly and you can go back and extract information from Levine quickly to help while reading this book.

I highly recommend this book as a member of the holy trilogy of quantum chemistry and I highly recommend using my algorithm of how to go about reading the holy trilogy.

Upper Dolpo | A beautiful portrayal of one of the Nepal Himalaya's most remote regions!

A wonderful book of photos and text whether you are going to Nepal to trek in Upper Dolpo or an armchair Himalayan traveler! Leo's wonderful photos of the region and Dolpo-pa (local people) really bring remote Dolpo, a remote border region of Nepal and Tibet, to life. The commentary from Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard" adds further depth to the book; a virtual trip through one of Nepal's most far-flung regions.

I was privileged to lead Leo Montejo on his Dolpo trek with Kamzang Journeys through this special region of high lakes and passes, remote villages, welcoming Dolpo inhabitants, snow leopards, blue sheep and Tibetan Buddhist chortens and monasteries. One of the Himalaya's hidden 'beyuls', or sacred sanctuaries, that most people will never be able to visit because of the challenges of getting there.

This is a book to keep on your coffee table for a long time!

The 'Snow Leopard' through the eyes of a camera

I was fortunate enough to be on the trek with Leo when he retraced George Schaller and Peter Matthiessen's journey through Upper Dolpo in Nepal. Leo's book is a testament to the meticulous detail and energy that he exhibited throughout the trek in searching for what he felt Schaller and Matthiessen would have seen and experienced during their trip back in September of 1973.
Leo's pictures work wonderfully to bring to life the words of Schaller and Matthiesson, giving the reader a real sense of understanding of what the region is like and how difficult it must have been for those two men back in the early 70's when they didn't have the comforts that Leo and his fellow travellers had.
Anyone who has read the 'Snow Leopard' or who has trekked or dreamed of trekking this region would love this book.

A Very Interesting Travel Tale

This is a very interesting read about a road trip made by two brothers from the UK to the eastern tip of Russia in a car. Sometimes amusing, sometimes scary, and always interesting you will feel like you are riding along in the back seat for the trip. If you like to read about travel and especially if you have an interest in Siberia you will definitely enjoy this book.

Fine Art of Black and White Photography

Naked Beauty is the fine art of black and white photography, classic nude poses, and publishing.

The photographs are almost all taken in a studio with a white background and white floor, or the negative of a black wall and black floor. Sylvie Blum has mastered the technique of high key photography. The surroundings are a very light or dark gray tone, the subject has an amazing range of fine tones from perfect black to snow white. This is an almost impossible technique. Lighting and exposure are perfection in every single image.

The book is laid out with absolutely no distractions from the images. There are no page numbers, no captions, simply a white border around the photographs. The book is an oversized 11 x 14 inches that shows off each image's high resolution and detail. Great care was taken to choose images that would face each other on two pages that the composition would flow from one image to the next. There is almost a two page pallet used to display the images. The rhythm of images facing each other is occasionally broken with only one strong image facing a blank page.

The last pages of the book are thumbnails on the right-hand page, with the Plate list on the left-hand side. The list is sometimes a title, sometimes the model name, sometimes no title, but always followed by the year of the photograph. Seeing 20 of these images in smaller form all on one page is also an interesting way to view the photographs. Another rhythm shows up, one of tone, form, and series.

The pictures are not erotic, but sensual in their flow. Unlike Mapplethorpe or Helmut Newton, these are pictures of women that happen to not have clothes on. It is a more organic pure study of form, light and shadow. The models are stunningly beautiful, all are thin, but not model anorexic thin. They have an athletic firm tone. It appears that Blum has posed each model to emphasize what is perfect about each woman's body. I was struck by how often the model's skin looks like a perfect fruit or vegetable, especially peppers.

The printing, binding and publishing of this book is amazing. The subtle gradation of tone in Blum's photographs is the most difficult thing to reproduce in a printed book. The images in this book are virtually gallery images. The paper and book cover are of a satin finish that is as sensuous as the images. This is printing and binding at a very high standard.

The book has 99 full page images in black and white. The book opens with an essay by Anne Wilkes Tucker, photography curator of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and closes with a brief biography of Blum. All text is presented in five languages.

The only issue I take with this book is the essay by Anne Wilkes Tucker. The essay talks a lot about how Sylvie Blum is a female photographing nude females. It traces some of the history of women photographing women. The flavor I got from this was, somehow this is different or important and special in some way. I'm not sure I agree that this book has anything to do with that. I think this book stands on the gorgeous photography, perfection in technique, and magnificent printing. Whether it is a female behind the camera or not, makes no difference to me. What I care about is the feeling and results of the work. Blum has advanced nude photography with this book. She stands proudly on the shoulders of Ruth Bernhard, Imogen Cunningham, Sally Mann, Jock Sturges, and tangentially Diane Arbus; who all came before her. These are incredibly beautiful images, no matter the gender.

Naked Beauty is a beautiful volume of black and white photographs.

Poses ranging from kinetic to fetal

Former model Sylvie Blum switches to the other side of the camera and transforms her nude subjects into gleaming black-and-white puzzle-sculptures. Even though many of her photographs show only part of the female model's body, it is surprising how much personality is evoked in the compositions by a jutting shoulder blade or uplifted hands. Her full-body poses range from kinetic to fetal. The aggressively athletic postures are contradicted by the soft gleam of naked skin.

To me, the most disturbing portraits involved a bald, ultra-thin model. Here, Blum tended to angle her camera upward from below, giving her subject the appearance of a Giacometti sculpture.

This volume pays homage to the alluring, young, female form, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes athletically arrogant. Very few props were used, which is why the clenched circle of a nipple ring comes as something of a shock on the model named Vel. It somehow makes her seem even more naked. The only banal portrait was a pouty-lipped, head-and-breast shot of Ashley, which would have been more at home in a 'Playboy' magazine.

The main body of this oversized (11"x13.5") book--99 full-page photographs--is followed by a plate list, where the author identifies the year the photograph was taken, along with a sometimes whimsical title.

À Paris, putain est plus qu'un mot. C'est une béquille. Une béquille pour les gênes sociales et mentales du Parisien. Il est impossible d'avoir une conversation de plus de cinq minutes avec un Parisien sans entendre résonner le son de la béquille. Cela est vrai, sauf si vous êtes vous-même du cru. Les Parisiens ont développé une aptitude rare : celle de ne jamais remarquer le son de la béquille. Le mot putain a simplement disparu à l'oreille du Parisien.
Le nom putain renvoie à une prostituée. L'interjection, elle, ne renvoie à personne. Dans son usage le plus commun, elle exprime avec vivacité des sentiments typiquement parisiens tels que le mécontentement, la colère ou la frustration... dans les bouchons : «Putain, mais c'est pas possible !» ; à propos de son patron : «Il est complètement con, putain...» Dans ces circonstances particulières, le mot a valeur de ponctuation - tantôt majuscule, tantôt point final. C'est de loin l'usage le plus fréquent du mot.

Mais le terme sait dépasser ce petit cantonnement. Putain, à Paris, définit aussi la surprise. Un ciel ensoleillé : «Oh ! Putain, il fait beau» ; un coup d'oeil sur la montre : «Putain, il est déjà 2 heures ?» Plus péremptoire, il devient alors injonction ferme à cesser séance tenante galéjades et forfanteries : «Attends, putain, deux secondes», «Putain, t'es sérieux ?»... Dans la même veine, utilisé seul, il exprimera tout à la fois l'intérêt et la compassion lorsque sera annoncée une triste nouvelle.
Parisien 1 : Et c'est là que son mari l'a quittée.
Parisien 2 : Putain.
Parisien 1 : Ouais, et donc elle se retrouve avec trois gamins...

Capable of chasing Louis XIV out of Paris and Keeping Him Out

People capable of the Fronde have never really been subjugated. Invaders who establish themselves just sort of get ripped off and told to return with more money when they don't have any more to spend. I love Paris and Parisians. Paris is a a monument to freedom and I am upset by how dirty and polluted it has become.
