Great Technique Builder

A Must Have - I bought this book mostly for the sampler end result. Although there are more updated techniques for many of the blocks, this book is a great foundation for beginner quilters. I have been making quilts for about 5 years now and consider myself an "Confident Beginner" or maybe "Intermediate", but have not had the courage to try blocks such as LeMoyne Star or Goose Tracks or Basket and always avoid patterns that require me to make templates. This book helped me to break the mold. And I must say that the book is well written with clear, concise instructions. I am very pleased with the final product. If you are even considering this book, go ahead and buy it. You'll find it was worth it.

Best Quilting Book EVER

I bought this book to learn how to quilt about 15 years ago. I had no experience nor any friends who quilted to help show me the ropes. With this book, you need neither of those things. It is truly the equivalent of many, many hours of class instruction by an expert quilter. You will learn to select and prepare your fabrics, make templates, cut out quilt pieces, hand-piece, machine piece, applique, attach borders and binding, hand quilt, machine quilt, etc. No stone is left unturned. You will not be disappointed!

Very similar to 3rd ed. and a lot cheaper.

I bought a copy of the text for an Economic Public Finance course requiring the use of the 3rd edition to cut back on costs. When I compared this text to the 3rd edition, there were only a few differences that I noticed-

- Discussion questions had a few differences (Re-arranged, numbers changed slightly, ect)
- Charts and figures in the 3rd edition had more recent information (especially relevant in chapters 21-25)
- Chapter on Social Security had another (small) section in it.

If you need this textbook for a class but do not need the discussion questions, I would recommend this textbook over the newer one. There is virtually no difference between the two. If you need the updated charts and graphs from the newer edition, most of them are available in the PowerPoint presentations on the publisher's website.

I found this book through MIT's Open Courseware, it is an excellent read if you like the textbook style. The author does not seem to be bent on pushing one economic approach and explains the topics in a common sense manner.

About the Author

Gareth Holman, PhD, is research scientist and associate director at the Evidence-Based Practice Institute in Seattle WA. He was Bob Kohlenberg’s last graduate student at the University of Washington. At EBPI, Gareth designs, builds, and tests tools and trainings to help therapists feel more connected and do better work. Gareth is the lead trainer for FAP Level 1 online trainings and chairs the executive committee at the University of Washington Center for the Science of Social Connection.

Jonathan Kanter, PhD, received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Washington in 2002. He is currently assistant professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he directs the Depression Treatment Specialty Clinic which conducts research and provides behavioral therapy services. Kanter’s research focuses on understanding the psychopathology and treatment of depression from a behavioral perspective, with particular emphasis on functional analytic psychotherapy and behavioral activation. He is currently funded by the Center for Addictions and Behavioral Health Research to conduct research on reducing the stigma associated with depression and by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Research Growth Initiative to develop and evaluate behavioral activation for Latino depression.

Mavis Tsai, PhD, is cofounder of functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) and director of the FAP Clinic at the University of Washington. Mavis has an international following as a trainer, consultant, and clinician.

Bob Kohlenberg, PhD, is cofounder of FAP and professor of psychology at the University of Washington.

Pretty darn good!

When the Imperial prison barge Purge suffers thruster failure out in the boondocks, they appear to be in a lot of trouble. Hope presents itself in the form of an Imperial Star Destroyer that is nearby, apparently abandoned. And so, a team of engineers from the prison barge goes over to see if they can collect enough spare parts to repair their own ship. But, what the engineers find on the Star Destroyer is horror beyond their darkest nightmares!

OK, I must admit that I am often intrigued by crossover books - in this case one combining Star Wars and the popular zombie motif. Like all books, crossovers range from the ridiculous to the sublime, with the vast majority of them falling somewhere in between. As for myself, I found this book to be pretty darn good.

I thought that the author did a good job of combining Star Wars and zombies. I found the story to be reasonably written (the story has to be reasonable if it's going to be in Science Fiction), and yet nicely scary. Who was going to live and who was going to die? The author kept you guessing right up to the end of the book. Right, I really enjoyed this book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

Not bad but could have been better.

Death Troopers holds much promise at the outset. Zombies in Star Wars. Need I say more? And there are zombies. My main problem is it takes so long to see them. There are 234 pgs in the novel but the Zombies only appear on page 133. I don't know about you but I want to see zombies no more than 60 pgs in (1/4), not halfway.

I was also unsatisfied with the ending. Still and all it held my attention. It was also cool to see Han and Chewbacca. Both are well written and act the way you'd expect them too, especially pre-carbonite Han.

How cool would it have been to have Boba Fett instead of Han and Chewie?

Fett - "You paid me to bring the prisoners in alive, now you want me to kill them?"
Vader - "It shouldn't be too difficult, they're already dead."
Fett - "I'm chargin you double!"
Vader - "As you wish."

Worth the read.

Excellent short introduction to geostationary satellite

An excellent short introduction to geostationary satellite albeit a little bit outdated (publication date is 1988) and over priced for a book with about 200 pages of content (without index and front matter). Every important topics are covered, orbital mechanics, propulsion system, thermal control, mechanism, payload, etc. The chapters about orbital mechanics and related topics are a little bit harsh to read but the rest of the book is read easily for someone with some background in engineering (heat transfer, dynamics, etc.). There are some historical mistakes such as the confusion of Tsien Wei Chang with Tisen Hsue-Shen (Qian Xuesen) but overall it is an excellent read.
