This book provides a very clear treatment of model selection, the bootstrap and the computer-intensive philosophy. It places heavy emphasis on the bootstrap and cross validation. Other computer-intensive methods such as MCMC methods, multiple imputation and permutation methods are not treated. It represents development up to 1994 in a rapidly advancing area. There have been many additional theoretical and applied advances since then. It covers most of the topics of other competing books on bootstrap and resampling but is unique in its treatment of model selection and validation. It appears to require intermediate level knowledge of mathematics and freely uses matrix algebra. There are many good references and examples. The author uses FORTRAN to implement the methods and provides code. This may be a bit old fashioned. Current price of book is very high and these days there are many alternative texts to consider.

Hurray for Approach Guides!

OK -- these Approach Guides are just great! What a novel idea: a relatively short, well-written, easy-to-read travel companion which is useful whether you're actually going to a place, have come back from there, or are the proverbial arm-chair traveler. Each guide is right-on-point and sufficiently detailed, addressing a unique aspect of the art and architecture of a country or region, with plenty of photogrpahs, highlighted diagrams, maps and clear language. And all for a really reasonable price. I've purchased several Approach Guides -- for my Kindle, as pdf's, and to use on my iPad. I took three of the India Approach Guides with me on a recent trip there and they made for a perfect source of quick reference information while visting caves, temples and monuments. I've purchased a few other guides for places I'm considering visiting (Indonesia). And I've purchased a few for places I traveled to a long time ago in order to refresh my memory (Myanmar). I even got a thank you note from one of the authors after my first purchase! Good work, Approach Guides. You've come up with a brilliant and unique product.

Essential guide for these UNESCO World Heritage sites!

In 1983, the Ajanta and Ellora caves were the first sites in India selected as UNESCO World Heritage sites along with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Ajanta has 26 Buddhist caves built in 2 waves: 2nd Century BC and 4th Century AD. Ellora has 34 caves built later that are Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain. This guide selects the best 9 from Ajanta and the best 8 from Ellora for wonderfully clear, succinct commentary with highlighted diagrams, closeup photographs, and author's tips to get the most from your visit. I visited in March 2015, spending 4 hours at Ajanta and 5.5 hours at Ellora. This guide was truly invaluable to helping me locate and appreciate the highlights of these beautiful and inspiring spiritual places. I have used the Approach Guides for Bagan; Angkor Wat; Morocco; Khajuraho; and Delhi, Agra, and the Taj Mahal, which I have reviewed on their Amazon product pages with great praise. Bravo!

TWO BOOKS, SAME TITLE

I must be in a book-reading mood. I liked O'Reilly-Dugard's Killing Lincoln and decided to finish out their "Killing trilogy." Then I discovered Mansfield's book of the same title.

The subtitles on the two books differ, as well as the scope of their work. But both books are written in a popular "mystery style"---a la Grisham--which makes the subject approachable for those who do not dig into long-winded, heavily annotated historical and/or theological tomes. I like the latter but also appreciate the former on occasion.

Both books lean heavily on the material of the four canonical Gospels, and flesh out their stories with the latest anthropological, historical, cultural, geographical, sociological, archaeological knowledge about that region and that era. In this sense, both authors do well. We can quibble with some things, but on the whole, both books handle things well in this area.

Mansfield's book focuses primarily on the "Passion Week," starting with Christ's descent on a donkey from the Mount of Olives into Jerusalem. Over the course of his book, he does flash-back a bit to earlier events in Jesus' life and ministry, but that is not his prime focus. O'Reilly-Dugard, on the other hand, toss in lots of history---the various Caesars, the political environment in the Roman Empire, Herod the Great and other Herods--so that we get a general idea of context for the Christ story. They sometimes succeed in demonstrating the impact that this larger world has on the specifics of the life and times of Jesus; even if not all of it is necessary, it is still nice to have some knowledge of history. And O'Reilly-Dugard, unlike Mansfield, intend from the start to tell the whole story of the life of Jesus of Nazareth---at least as much as can be done in a who-dun-it format that is not too lengthy for the I-Pad generation.

I do like that both books still to a basic historical read; when I read some of Mansfield's work to my Bible study group I was asked "Is this a Christian book?" and "Is this man a Christian?" several times--and I did not read long. You do not have to use "religious language" to discuss this era, and it meant a lot to me that both books avoid that.

I note that one negative reviewer said that Mansfield writes in a "see Spot Run" manner. There is something to that criticism. Neither he nor O-D take for granted their readers' level of knowledge. But since there are few presumptions, both writers have created works that will be comprehensible to everybody.

And both sets of books do have notable moments. I liked O-D's absorption with the larger picture of history. I also appreciated the reference to the astronomical magazine's article on the comet of 5 BC. My librarian was able to find it for me online. O-D also did a fine job of "fleshing out" the stories of Jesus as a boy of 12 in the Temple, and also describing the affection with which Jesus washed His disciples feet the night of the Last Supper--noting that washing feet was the duty of a slave or servant---just the opposite of the behavior of the glory-seeking disciples who jockeyed for position in His upcoming kingdom.

Mansfield's story begins with a compare-and-contrast scene: the representatives of Rome--the secular deity--entering Jerusalem from one end of the city, while Jesus of Nazareth---welcomed as the Messiah of Israel ("sacred" deity_ came from another direction. I also liked his juxtaposition of the "scream of the Lamb" as He hung on the cross with "the screaming of the lambs" as they were slaughtered in the Jerusalem temple. Powerful and thought-provoking image!!

One critic of these books was concerned that they resurrected the old stereotypes of the evil and corrupt Pharisees and High Priest. I think many realize that no group is monolithic in its thinking. Some Saducees and Pharisees supported Jesus, others did not. And we know that some rabbis also spoke against some of the temple practices. But it some rabbis spoke against certain Temple practices, as administered by the religious authorities of the time---does this not confirm that something was amiss with the system? The Gospels mention only what pertains to the goal of their story. They do not flesh things out.

And the corruption in the Jewish temple is not an opportunity for anti-Semitic thinking. It only highlights that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"--Jews and Gentiles alike.

O'Reilly offended a friend of mine for a TV interview in which O said he does not take the Bible seriously and does not believe that Jesus could have spoken from the cross. Inspite of that, O-D does have Jesus speak from the cross. However, the remarks are limited which means O-D pulled a "Jesus Seminar" and gave black, pink, grey, and red colors to the remarks in the various Gospel reports. The four gospels do not recall a Jesus who was especially chatty during the six hours of agony. The statements they do record may not have been delivered in a particularly stress-free tone of voice. They do not elaborate. But the final cry "It is finished!" -- was substantive enough to convince the centurion looking on that "this was the son of God." As Mansfield noted---and O'Reilly too, though in a different part of his book--such a statement was career-threatening, if not worse. O-D breeze by the events of the crucifixion once the story lands at Calvary, whereas Mansfield focuses a couple chapters on it.

A lot more could be said about each book---pro and con. I recommend reading both, if only for the chance to learn from each author. O-D leave unexplained the reason for Jesus' death, and this will --- and no doubt has---offended some. He was a guy who relied on "logic," per O....and an intellectual. What sort of intellectual allows himself to be so brutally murdered? What does it mean that He did that? If He was lucid enough, after a brutal beating, to spar with the High Priest and Pilate---what does this say about the possibility that He was also able to speak more on the Cross than O-D believes? And why did He die?.......Mansfield's work makes more sense of this, I think. O-D leave it, I suppose, up to the reader.

Great Example of Interpreting and Retelling an Ancient Text/Story

Mansfield's "Killing Jesus" takes seriously the historical culture of the early part of the 1st century, as well as the testimony of the Gospels, and tells a story of the last week of Jesus' life from which many biblical exegetes, teachers, and pastors could learn a thing or two about interpretation of an ancient text. Anyone interested in the life of Jesus should read this book.

I've been reading many books on the history of the Roman empire that have taught me about the political situation surrounding the death of Jesus. This book gave a compelling description backed up with footnotes of the historical references that I was looking for.
