More to composition than meets the eye

A word on expectations here. This book will NOT help you answer the question, "how do I create great (as in real life emotive or iconic style) photographs?" The book does not teach you how to think creatively or help you 'see' what would make a great photograph from the world around you. Neither will it help you with 'art' style photography (creating photographs of anything that would not normally or naturally occur in real life). At least not directly or at first. What it may help you with, is giving you the technical know how or background knowledge to help you create a 'good' photograph once you already have the creative spark or you are already able to 'see' what would make a 'good' photograph. It will help you translate what is in your mind's eye in to a photographic image. The point here is that the book only illustrates enabling principles, not how to be creative or gain a mindset that allows you to be creative.

This is a great book if you want to know what principles are used in photographic composition. The book is written by an old hand at photography, Andreas Feininger, who practiced photography as both a hobby and a profession, so you definitely get the feeling that he knows what he's talking about. The book is now long out of print and the content does occasionally reference film based cameras, equipment and media. None the less, the principles of composition remain the same and as such, the book does outline most, if not all of the principles involved in photographic composition. Feininger also challenges some percieved or widely accepted wisdoms, citing that there are no hard and fast rules to photographic composition, only guidelines, which can be used or discarded as the reader sees fit.

Feininger delivers his message in 'an armchair by the hearth' style chat, which makes it eminently readable even if you have no interest in photography. The author's breadth and depth of experience stand out in an authoritative way without being condescending or high brow about it. The images and visual material he uses to illustrate his ideas, hit the mark on each occasion. As a result, the language, constructs and visual aids used make it very easy to read and gain an understanding of the point being made. This in turn makes it suitable for the novice, enthuiast and professional alike.

The only constructive criticism I have, is that in some of Feininger's explanations as to why any particular composition 'works', there is insufficient explanation or more usually, not enough depth of explanation as to why that particular compositional technique works or does not work, depending on the situation or context. On one or two occasions after having read Feininger's description and explanation of a particular compositional technique, I found myself thinking, "...so say you, but I just don't see it", or "...ok, but why is that so, what is the reason for that?".

In conclusion then, this is a great book purely for learning what composition in photography is all about and outlining what the principles are and what techniques can be used to compose a photograph. It is a little outdated now because it was written in the days of film cameras but this does not detract in any way from the concepts that are put across as photography is still photography, regardless of the media used to capture images. I can recommend this book to anyone who wants a layman's explanation and narrative of photographic compositional principles.

Another oldy but a goody

This is going to be like my review of Feininger's other books. He was one of the best photographic writers of his time.

First the bad news. By current standards, the reproduction quality of the photos just doesn't stand up to today's standards. That's just how things were in the 1970s. And there aren't many color images.

That is not a reflection on the images themselves. I am sure many of the originals would be impressive printed with today's high gloss photo book standards. So don't be put off by the reproduction quality.

Now the good news. What makes this book stand out (and any other book you can find by Feininger) is the excellent information. This book has no digital information of course, but photography is still photography. It is all about lighting and composition and dozens of technical and artistic decisions both great and small that make or break an image, whether we are talking about film or digital sensors. In fact, many of the older photography books have a lot more information than a lot of current books. I find gems of wisdom and information in Feininger's books that are hard to come buy in a lot of current books.

This is one of the best "old school" introductions to composition that you can find. After you read and absorb this book, I would suggest you follow up with The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman.

Not for Beginners

This book is not for beginners. If you are new to banjo or new to bluegrass music in general, I would recommend an easier book like those written by Wayne Erbsen or Janet Davis. This book is much better suited for someone who has played banjo for a while and has the patience to work through Earl's passages. I know everyone else loves this book and hey it is a great book if you're ready for it. But for someone new to banjo this book will intimidate you and likely discourage you. Don't jump into something too fast, try one of the other books I mentioned first. Work completely through that. Then try learning an easier Scruggs tune like Ballad of Jed Clampett (you can find tabs online). If you are able to do that song to speed, then go ahead and get this book. Otherwise, hold off. Also should point out, the CD is only for the lessons portion of the book, it does not contain any of the tunes or songs. Consequently, you'll need to purchase or download some of Earl's albums. I recommend the Essential Earl Scruggs and/or Foggy Mountain Banjo. These two albums cover about 80% of this book.

Book with CD Highly Recommended

Having always wanted to play a banjo and convinced by a recent birthday that life is short; I took a leap of faith and purchased a rather expensive banjo. Knowing the pressure was on to make some quick progress in order to justify the expense to my wife, I purchased several banjo instructional books. By far the most useful has been this Earl Scruggs book with CD. The text walks you very slowly and methodically through an increasingly difficult progression of skills and the audio is indispensible, providing the nuance of Scruggs' sound that I wouldn't have been able to pick up on from the printed tab alone. The audio is in Scruggs's own voice from an LP record from many years back which adds a lot of nostalgia to the practice sessions. With this book and CD learning the banjo has been as fun as I thought it would be. If I was relying on the other books I purchased I am afraid I would be very frustrated at this point. If you are an aspiring banjo picker I highly recommend this book and CD. I am convinced that anyone who invests the time and takes each lesson slowly can become an accomplished banjo picker with this book and CD. $30 is a small investment for the musical skills you will develop.

Simply put, one of the best books on the planet for learning the 5-string banjo. Don't start in the middle and try to figure it out from there. Many people learning to play music start too fast and then blame the source for not being up to whatever they consider easy. Start with the publication page and go from there. Spend a year learning the right hand techniques. Spend another year learning the left hand, THEN learn some songs. I've been playing banjo since 1975 and started with this book. Learning to play an instrument is not easy. Hacking at one on the other hand is not too difficult.So, if you don't have the time to spend learning, find something else to do like collecting stamps or something.

About the Author
Lucy West is the founder and Director of Metamorphosis Teaching Learning Communities. Formerly the Director of Mathematics Instruction in New York City's Community School District 2, Lucy also served as Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Grades K-12, for nearly 200 schools in New York City's Region 9. She is a nationally known speaker on professional development practices and a master mathematics coach.

Antonia Cameron is a Master Coach for K-6 Mathematics at Metamorphosis. Former co-director of Mathematics in the City, a national center for professional development at The City College of New York, Toni is coauthor of numerous facilitator guides and Contexts for Learning unit books. She is a nationally known mathematics "coaching coach" and speaker on professional development practices.

Clear Techniques and Information to Use Them Well

West and Cameron lay out not only the what's but the whys of a rigorous yet useable model for coaching teachers. Woven in are practical tips, coach moves, advice for avoiding common traps, and countless gems of wisdom. Their emphasis on having clear teacher development goals is crucial in today's world of checklists or "implementation with fidelity" that often pass for coaching.

Probably most important is their model of co-teaching as a core practice for coaching. If you think coaches are to just observe, or are to always wait until the teacher can construct wisdom, read carefully about how West and Cameron honor teacher voice and thought while guiding them toward what are clearly best practices.

Powerful and emotional story

My family is from a small town in Louisiana and I have not come across too many stories that reference small town Creole culture. For me, there was a comfort to it, I was so engulfed in Lula Mae and her family right up until the last page and I was sad when the story ended because I wanted to hear more about the family and the culture. I hope Ms. Cuie has more stories in the works!

I truly ejoyed this book based on the true story of Lula Mae. The ending left me hanging and wondering what will happen to Lula Mae's children. I look forward to reading a second book.

Great read

This book hooked me right from the start. It was a great read. The story pulled me in and kept me going to find out how the conflicts would be resolved. I loved the Colorado and Minnesota connections in the story since I have lived in both states. It brought me home. Would highly recommend this book for an inspirational and romantic story to get lost in.
