A great book for the beginner to intermediate blues harp player
By Timothy B. Riley
I have been fooling around with the harmonica for a few years now. I bought this author's previous book, Harmonica For Dummies, and I enjoyed it. However it's the Blues that attract many people to this instrument. Although I admire someone who can play classical or pop music on the harmonica, but it's harmonica players like Little Walter, Junior Wells, John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson and even more contemporary players like John Popper from Blues Traveler that make you want to pick up the harmonica and blow.

Like the earlier book, Blues Harmonica for Dummies takes the student from the very beginning steps (such as "how to buy a harmonica") to more intermediate techniques like bending notes, over-blowing, using an amplifier, and playing a chromatic harp. However, each lesson has a blues bent to it. This book also comes with a CD that allows the student to hear what they are supposed to sound like as they work their way through the lessons and exercises. This is definitely my favorite between the two books and the one that I will be recommending to others beginning harmonica enthusiasts. Well done, Winslow!

The absolute MOST FUN for your money!
By B. J. Lewis
A piano player since a child, at one time a professional violinist, and a dabbler in the harp -- what am I doing with a book that teaches the harmonica? Having a GRAND time, is the obvious answer.

Years ago I bought an inexpensive harmonica -- still have it -- and learned a few of the basics. But it was soon stashed away in the piano bench and almost forgotten. Why spend time on an instrument that, at best, sounds like a child's toy? Well this book disproves that assessment -- whoa, does it ever!!

Following Mr. Yerxa's clear instructions, I have experienced one surprise after the other. And I've had SO much fun in the process. I am now about two/thirds through his book and have paused only because I've reached the point that I need to replace my original "toy" with the real thing, something that can do justice to all that he has taught me so far.

What I have also learned is that there is a vast difference between "playing a harmonica" and "playing a BLUES harmonica." So even if you know the rudiments of traditional harmonica playing, this presents another, quite wonderful dimension.

The inclusion of his CD is not only a great teaching addition, but inspirational as well.

If you are at all interested in the subject, you absolutely will not go wrong by purchasing this book.

Did I say it was fun? Forgive me, but that bears repeating.

excellent starter
By guitfiddleblue
I got this book with the intention of maybe starting to play the harmonica. I have played the guitar (blues, jazz, rock, country, etc...) for about 22yrs now and have a solid understanding of music theory; so I delved into this book with some background knowledge. Suffice it to say, the author gives a good chapter on just the theory of the blues. I think you would get more out of this book, however, if you already have an understanding of theory. Technique is covered, what harmonica to start with is covered, and the cd is essential to getting the examples right. All in all, this is a GREAT book/cd combo and I highly recommend it!!! I have been playing the harmonica (bought a Hohner Special 20 after some research) for only 2wks and can already play a couple of blues melodies thanks to this book. FIVE STARS all the way! If you're looking to learn harmonica this is THE book in my opinion.

Was Napoleon killed by the arsenic in his wallpaper? How did Rasputin survive cyanide poisoning? Which chemicals in our environment pose the biggest threat to our health today?
In The Elements of Murder, John Emsley offers a fascinating account of five of the most toxic elements--arsenic, antimony, lead, mercury, and thallium--describing their lethal chemical properties and highlighting their use in some of the most famous murder cases in history. Indeed, we meet in this book a who's who of heartless murderers. Mary Ann Cotton, who used arsenic to murder her mother, three husbands, a lover, eight of her own children, and seven step children, a grand total of 20 people. Michael Swango, who may have killed as many as 60 of his patients and several of his colleagues during the 20 years he practiced as a doctor and paramedic. And even Saddam Hussein, who used thallium sulfate to poison his political rivals. Emsley also shows which toxic elements may have been behind the madness of King George III (almost certainly a case of acute lead poisoning), the delusions of Isaac Newton, and the strange death of King Charles II. In addition, the book examines many modern day environmental catastrophes, including accidental mass poisoning from lead and arsenic, and the Minamata Bay disaster in Japan.
Written by a leading science writer, famous for his knowledge of the elements and their curious and colorful histories, The Elements of Murder offers an enticing combination of true crime tales and curious science that adds up to an addictive read.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Emsley (Vanity, Vitality, and Virility: The Science Behind the Products You Love to Buy) hits a bull's eye in this fascinating, wonderfully readable forensic history of five deadly chemicals (mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead and thallium) and their starring role in that most intoxicating drama of pure evil: murder. A deeply knowledgeable chemist (he's science writer in residence at Cambridge University) with a gift for making accessible the dry and bewilderingly arcane, Emsley's at his best in case studies of infamous poisoners and their victims. During the reign of James I of England, for instance, the poet Thomas Overbury, having fallen out of royal favor, was administered three fatal doses of mercury, only to survive. For his stubbornness he was administered a fourth dose—by enema—and finally succumbed. Mary Bateman, the "Yorkshire Witch," was equally unlucky. Convicted in 1809 of poisoning a client, Mary was hanged and her corpse skinned so pieces could be sold as charms. Not all the incidents are in the past: Emsley also discusses contemporary environmental poisoning from mercury and Saddam Hussein's use of thallium sulfate on his enemies. Fanatical devotees of the macabre might thumb past sections devoted to less sensational history. But the general reader will not be disappointed: each of these deadly toxins was at one time or another promoted for its unique health or beauty benefits. 15 b&w illus. (June)

From Booklist
Readers seduced by this book's provocative title into expecting a spicy catalog of murder and mayhem may be a bit disappointed by its somewhat dry and technical tone. The author, a veteran science writer, certainly knows his stuff, but he may have slightly overestimated his audience's tolerance for discussions of chemical formulas. Still, for the patient reader, there is a wealth of intriguing information here. Emsley traces the evolution of alchemy and explains the central role that the quest to turn metal into gold plays in the history of poison, pausing along the way to note that Isaac Newton's obsession with alchemy may have contributed to his madness. Later chapters discuss the history, uses, and murderous abuses of mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead, and thallium. Yes, it's technical, but just keep plodding: it's not all formulas. Emsley retells enough juicy and lurid (and sometimes famous) stories of murder by poison to enthrall both true-crime fans and budding mystery writers. David Pitt

Review

"A delightful potion of chemical erudition, forgotten science history and ghastly murder schemes.... Reading The Elements of Murder is like watching a hundred episodes of CSI, but without having to sit through the tedious personal relationships of the characters.... Along the way the bodies pile up as Emsley relates spectacular case histories of poisonings, accidental and criminal.... Emsley mines what he calls 'the darker side of the periodic table' with consumate skill."--Dick Teresi, The New York Times Book Review

"A fascinating anecdotal history of killing by five elements--mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead and thalium.... With something of interest on almost every page, it combines the satisfactions of a detective story, intriguing snippets of history, popular science, unsolved mysteries and murder. A powerful brew." --P. D. James, Sunday Telegraph

"Emsley captures the creepy common ground of science and homicide.... Beyond the scandals and celebrities, what makes 'The Elements of Murder' such a charming read is the absurdity of its anecdotes.... Hitchcock could make many films from this book."--Brenn Jones, San Francisco Chronicle

"Fascinating, wide-ranging and, let's not mince words, macabre new history of poison.... A truly guilty pleasure."--Wall Street Journal

"The list of the famous who may have been poisoned by one of these devious toxins is a long one, from Pope Clement II to Mozart. Emsley has dug up the dirt on these and a rogue's gallery of lesser-known cases.... If the golden age of poisoning is gone (replaced, to be sure, by other forms of mayhem), in Emsley's book it's still very much alive."--Laurence A. Marschall, Natural History

"Emsley retells enough juicy and lurid (and sometimes famous) stories of murder by poison to enthrall both true-crime fans and budding mystery writers.... The author certainly knows his stuff."--Booklist

"Emsley hits a bull's eye in this fascinating, wonderfully readable forensic history of five deadly chemicals (mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead and thallium) and their starring role in that most intoxicating drama of pure evil: murder. A deeply knowledgeable chemist with a gift for making accessible the dry and bewilderingly arcane, Emsley's at his best in case studies of infamous poisoners and their victims."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"I heartily recommend that this book be read and added to the library of every chemist, toxicologist, and avid crime fiction reader, wherever they may be around the world. This book is an absolute delight and, for the price, a bargain to boot."--Chemical and Engineering News

"Both as a natural history of poisons and as a near-encyclopedic who-used-what-how reference, the book fascinates. The glossary and bibliography are most helpful. So dangerous is the world that many readers will choose to stay home, working on that special sauce for mother-in-laws meat loaf."--Foreword Magazine

"This absorbing volume is equal parts chemistry, history and mystery, but you don't need to be a scientist, historian or murderer to appreciate all three facets."--BookPage (Beach Reading Selection)

Lurid Tales of Chemistry
By Rob Hardy
We are mere bundles of chemicals, most of which are shuttled back and forth with astonishing speed, accuracy, and efficiency. It is so fine-tuned a system that it is not hard to find chemicals that will make it all go wrong. Some of these chemicals are so basic as to be the very elements of the universe around us, and in _The Elements of Murder: A History of Poison_ (Oxford University Press), John Emsley has given us a chemistry text dressed in the entertaining garb of famous poisoning cases in history and in popular culture. Chemistry is often presented as neither exciting nor fun, but Emsley (whose most recent book was an entertaining history of phosphorus) knows that even a big book on the big five elements (arsenic, antimony, lead, mercury, and thallium) is going to be attractive reading for many of us, if the elements are connected with lethality. The publisher, staid old Oxford, knows it, too, and has dressed the book with a lurid picture of a fearsome bearded man holding a small bottle with a skull and crossbones on it. Students of the physical sciences: prepare for a bit of morbid fun.

The alchemists developed poisons, but mostly set about poisoning themselves. Newton's hair, for instance, has been analyzed, and it had greatly elevated levels of mercury, lead, arsenic, and antimony; he often tried to volatilize compounds of these, and could not help breathing them in. He did live to be 84, and was certainly productive, but he was an unpleasant and paranoid man; to what extent the poisons (especially mercury) addled his brain we will never know. Hatters (as in "mad as a hatter") were famously subject to the derangement mercury brought since they used mercury nitrate to make felt. Another career field that had a surprising danger from mercury: detective work. The dusting powder that used to be used for finding fingerprints would be breathed in by the one doing the dusting; it was only in the 1940s that the elemental culprit for the tremors, irritability, and other symptoms in detectives was identified and the powder formula changed. Emsley gives many anecdotes of deliberate poisonings, often by serial killers like Hélène Jegado, who poisoned an unknown number of people during her career, using arsenic. She was a pious and intelligent servant, who was distressed at each of the funerals she had to attend. "My masters die wherever I go," she sobbed at one funeral, and many sympathized with her bad luck. Her last poisoning occurred in 1851, a time when forensic arsenic levels could be obtained from the stomach contents of her last victim, fingering her positively. She didn't get any financial gain from the deaths, but arsenic was used so consistently that in France it was known as _poudre de succession_ (inheritance powder).

Emsley's history covers his elements well, and not just their histories in poisoning. Much of the book is an examination of the history of chemistry itself, from pre-scientific days to the current ones when poisoners are much more at risk of discovery than ever before. There are welcome side trips, like the one about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome being blamed on the release of antimony from infant mattresses. The antimony had been used as a fire retardant, but after much scientific hand-wringing, was found not to be an issue in SIDS. There is good humor in the ghoulishness; Emsley writes that thallium used to be "... sold in over-the-counter products for removing unwanted hair. It was also used to remove unwanted relatives." There is plenty of well-explained chemistry here, for those who need it as justification for enjoying lurid stories of poisoners; the stories may be morbidly fascinating, but fascinating nonetheless.

The Poison Pen of Professor Emsley
By Bruce Crocker
Professor John Emsley is my favorite guide to the world of chemistry and I look forward to every book that bears his good name. The Elements Of Murder was no exception and I ordered it long before it came out. I wanted to give it a 5 star rating even before I read it, but I must give it a 4 star rating after a thorough reading. Professor Emsley has authored many books: The Elements and Nature's Building Blocks are references [for professional and layperson respectively], Molecules at an Exhibition is a collection of essays, and The 13th Element takes on a single subject [phosphorus]. Vanity, Vitality, and Virility, his previous book, seems to be the model for The Elements of Murder. In Vanity, Vitality, and Virility, Emsley takes on multiple chemical subjects in short vignettes, has an introduction and postscript, and includes a glossary. The problem I have with The Elements of Murder involves what it is missing: there is no postscript or epilogue. I enjoyed the stories of death and murder involving the elements mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead, and thallium. I enjoyed the short tales of other poisonous elements in the last chapter. I also felt that the book ended rather abruptly. I still recommend this book to anyone with an interest in chemistry [especially chemistry and history], but I hope that when it comes out in paperback [or in the later hardback printings] that some kind of conclusion is added to the book.

Elements of Darkness
By ealovitt
The poisonous elements spotlighted in this book--mercury, arsenic, antimony, lead, and thallium--also served as medications for most of recorded history. It is amazing what people would concoct and swallow to cure constipation, including mercury laxatives and antimony `perpetual pills' that passed through the gut and irritated it into expelling its contents. These pills could be washed off and recycled. In fact, "there are reports that such pills were highly effective and passed from generation to generation."

"The Elements of Murder" makes it clear that it was sometimes impossible to determine whether a victim was poisoned by his enemies or his doctors.

The author, John Emsley is both a chemist and an award-winning science writer. He chronicles the characteristics of each element with a magisterial British presence that eludes many American science writers, who sometimes place a heavy reliance on adjectives. Emsley goes for the telling anecdote. The insanity of men slowly poisoned by lead is revealed in a list of items they stored in a lifeboat: "button polish, silk handkerchiefs, curtain rods, and a portable writing desk." The largest mass poisoning by arsenic was actually funded by UNICEF in an effort to provide clean drinking water to the people of West Bengal, India and Bangladesh.

Although the stories of individual poisoners and their victims are interesting, the author's investigations into the wholesale slaughter of people by insidious, omnipresent elements in their environment are equally compelling. Were both the Roman AND British Empires brought low by lead?

Read "The Elements of Murder" and decide for yourself.

By Matthew French
This eBook is a good exposition to music literature that may help those new to "classical" music. It defines many forms (such as Rondo) and styles (such as Mazurkas, Waltzes, and other dances) of music that have been developed throughout the periods of music history. It may require some prior knowledge of music theory for easy reading, but explains theory well enough to be understood without prior knowledge. At the same time, it strikes me as more of an aesthetic exploration of music rather than a textbook on history and theory.

The version I downloaded seems to not allow for actual listening to the music referenced in the book. Since the book refers to specific compositions often, this may be a hindrance to some.

Shantaram: A Novel, by Gregory David Roberts

"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured."

So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay's hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas---this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

Amazon.com Review
Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to his arrival in Bombay he escaped from an Australian prison where he had begun serving a 19-year sentence. He served two years and leaped over the wall. He was imprisoned for a string of armed robberies peformed to support his heroin addiction, which started when his marriage fell apart and he lost custody of his daughter. All of that is enough for several lifetimes, but for Greg Roberts, that's only the beginning.

He arrives in Bombay with little money, an assumed name, false papers, an untellable past, and no plans for the future. Fortunately, he meets Prabaker right away, a sweet, smiling man who is a street guide. He takes to Lin immediately, eventually introducing him to his home village, where they end up living for six months. When they return to Bombay, they take up residence in a sprawling illegal slum of 25,000 people and Linbaba becomes the resident "doctor." With a prison knowledge of first aid and whatever medicines he can cadge from doing trades with the local Mafia, he sets up a practice and is regarded as heaven-sent by these poor people who have nothing but illness, rat bites, dysentery, and anemia. He also meets Karla, an enigmatic Swiss-American woman, with whom he falls in love. Theirs is a complicated relationship, and Karla’s connections are murky from the outset.

Roberts is not reluctant to wax poetic; in fact, some of his prose is downright embarrassing. Throughought the novel, however, all 944 pages of it, every single sentence rings true. He is a tough guy with a tender heart, one capable of what is judged criminal behavior, but a basically decent, intelligent man who would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially anyone he knew. He is a magnet for trouble, a soldier of fortune, a picaresque hero: the rascal who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. His story is irresistible. Stay tuned for the prequel and the sequel. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of this massive, thrillingly undomesticated potboiler, a young Australian man bearing a false New Zealand passport that gives his name as "Lindsay" flies to Bombay some time in the early '80s. On his first day there, Lindsay meets the two people who will largely influence his fate in the city. One is a young tour guide, Prabaker, whose gifts include a large smile and an unstoppably joyful heart. Through Prabaker, Lindsay learns Marathi (a language not often spoken by gora, or foreigners), gets to know village India and settles, for a time, in a vast shantytown, operating an illicit free clinic. The second person he meets is Karla, a beautiful Swiss-American woman with sea-green eyes and a circle of expatriate friends. Lin's love for Karla—and her mysterious inability to love in return—gives the book its central tension. "Linbaba's" life in the slum abruptly ends when he is arrested without charge and thrown into the hell of Arthur Road Prison. Upon his release, he moves from the slum and begins laundering money and forging passports for one of the heads of the Bombay mafia, guru/sage Abdel Khader Khan. Eventually, he follows Khader as an improbable guerrilla in the war against the Russians in Afghanistan. There he learns about Karla's connection to Khader and discovers who set him up for arrest. Roberts, who wrote the first drafts of the novel in prison, has poured everything he knows into this book and it shows. It has a heartfelt, cinemascope feel. If there are occasional passages that would make the very angels of purple prose weep, there are also images, plots, characters, philosophical dialogues and mysteries that more than compensate for the novel's flaws. A sensational read, it might well reproduce its bestselling success in Australia here.

From Booklist
A thousand pages is like a thousand pounds--it sounds like too much to deal with. Nevertheless, Roberts' very long novel sails along at an amazingly fast clip. Readers in the author's native Australia apparently finished every page of it, for they handed it considerable praise. Now U.S. readers can enjoy this rich saga based on Roberts' own life: escape from a prison in Australia and a subsequent flight to Bombay, which is exactly what happens to Lindsay, the main character in the novel; once in Bombay, he joins the city's underground. Roberts graphically, even beautifully, evokes that milieu--he is as effective at imparting impressions as any good travel writer--in this complex but cohesive story about freedom and the lack of it, about survival, spiritual meaning, love, and sex; in other words, about life in what has to be one of the most fascinating cities in the world. One's first impression of this novel is that it is simply a good story, but one soon comes to realize that Roberts is also a gifted creator of characters--not only Lindsay but also Prabaker, who becomes Lindsay's guide, caretaker, and entree into various elements of Bombay society. Soon, too, one becomes aware and appreciative of Roberts' felicitous writing style. In all, despite the novel's length, it is difficult not to be ensnared by it. And, be forewarned, it will be popular. Brad Hooper

The Best Novel of the 21st Century...so far
By Daniel Myers
FINALLY, a gut-wrenching, harrowing, well-penned novel, whose author suffers not from the literary constipation of most current "highbrow" authors (He's faced down far more deadly things, chronicled herein, to be affrighted by sharp penned editors.) - A book, in short, that will make your heart bleed with the depths to which the human soul can sink and the glories to which it can rise. ----I read so many books, but this is the first true work of art and genius published in this new century that I've managed to discover. It is a book from which I'm still recovering from having read. Like all great art, it leaves one with a new perspective on the world and causes one to reconnoitre the heart's bearings. The book strips away the lies we tell ourselves and leaves the heartstrings bare for the reader to see, where he/ she will recognise his/her own.

Let's get something straight here: This is not a book of "purple prose" or any form of sentimentality. Each tear shed is wrung from harrowing experience. As Roberts writes, "One of the reasons we crave love, and seek it so desperately, is that love is the only cure for loneliness, and shame, and sorrow. But some feelings sink so deep into the heart that only loneliness can help you find them again. Some truths about yourself are so painful that only shame can help you live with them. And some things are just so sad that only your soul can do the crying for you."--Your soul will have cried with Roberts's many times before the end of the book.

This is truly a book for lovers of great literature. Roberts writes, "I never found a club or a clan or idea that was more important to me than the men and women who believed in it."--This book is one that values the mystery of people and the mystery of human existence above all else. ----Including yours, reader.

Nice prose style but no editor
By Big Apple
Interesting real story (if it is, indeed, real, the historical basis seems to be a bit vague, my guess is that most of it is made up) and clearly the man can write prose, but the book is too long and it is over-rated. The first third is a series of never ending conversations in a Bombay restaurant in which we are introduced to a plethora of characters. It's a slow, very static start and there are way too many names to remember. Then the second third is great. This is where the story lies. The part where he goes to the slum to be a doctor, gets thrown in prison, and gets out. The rest is beautifully written but boring. I'm not surprised the sequel isn't really selling nor that the movie has taken so long to appear. The last third of this book is a HUGE let down. It is slow and unbelievable. For some reason the author has tagged a war story onto what is already a hybrid of genres - prison escape and love story. It just feels too much. The writer heroin addict can learn languages and now he is Rambo? He seems to train forever too. Several years if you add up all the 'And we practised this for three months...' In general, the narrative is at times too ponderous, which is frustrating because at heart this is an action story, a book for guys not gals, and not quite the literary masterpiece it thinks it is. The philosophy conversations between the protagonist and Khader, for example, don't work and are a bit silly. A mafia don espousing on the meaning of life might be a good idea for a character but the realization is cornball. The conversations are too basic, too high school-ish. The 'love story' if you can call it that is poorly delineated. It's the classic case of show don't tell only this author tells and doesn't show. Protagonist Lin TELLS us repeatedly how beautiful she is, how much he loves her, but we are never SHOWN why. We are not convinced the obviously conniving woman is worthy of so much attention and it makes for a sappy hero. It's also a big disappointment that a story about a man who escaped from a maximum security prison devotes so little space to the escape. Two hundred pages of chit chat with characters you'll never remember to open with and then just a few pages on the escape. There's a novel in this beautiful sprawling mess somewhere but truly it needs an editor. Clearly whoever published this and edited it was too in love with the material. Sorry, it's not Melville.

Outstanding, heads and tails above the run of the mill book!
By Kip Derringer
The books plot, twists, and pace would make a great book in itself but it would have to be shorter. It is over 900 pages. What caught me is without trying to shove it down your throat is the Author's love of people. Good, bad, ugly, beautiful, extremely poor, extremely rich, strange, and even straight out hell types of people. The author and main character who who portrays himself as no pillar of society seems to have an intense love of humans and human nature. Not only are the characters and what they do complex but no matter how deep or shallow they are in crime ranging from petty scammers to murderers and even torturers, in by far most cases he pulls the good out of them and demonstrates that even though people get themselves in these situations regularly, that we consider heinous crimes, there is actually good in them that may be hidden deep but is in every human being.

It not only did its job of entertaining, but got me to thinking philosophically about people when I was not reading it. Anybody that knows me would not consider me a philosophical thinker. That is why I rated the mood as thoughtful though it works up to to being every bit as much suspenseful. It is an incredible book that starts out interesting and moved on to the point where if I could manage to put it down by midnight I couldn't wait to get myself back to reading it. I read the book twice. After the first time I went to Southeast Asia, not including India which is the setting of the book, but once to Thailand and twice to Nepal. I really enjoyed the people and some of them could make me laugh harder than I ever have in my life. But they were always trying to pull petty scams. Then when I got back from my third trip I read Shantaram the second time and it put things into perspective. They assume we are all rich while the poorest of them live in plywood and cardboard houses with plastic scraps held down by rocks for a roof. So what is it for the Americans who likely paid over 2K Just to get there and back to get suckered in a petty scam. I thought about my loss of $60.00 to a scam and it seemed more ignorance on my part than a crime on their part and just learned to be more prepared and knowledgeable the next time I bought something. I really liked them other than having to be wary of the scam at any time. But that was all part of the some of the best experiences i had in my life. In addition when I saw how many people were poor and how they lived, I just considered it a donation to charity that can't be written off. Big Deal. Those were the best experiences I ever had.

Review
Dr. Judith Tyberg is to be congratulated on this work. It can be freely predicted that her treatise will prove a revelation and a fresh stimulus to a subject which fascinated minds like Sri Aurobindo and Ananda Coomaraswamy. It is a completely new approach. What Dr. Tyberg has woven for us is a magnificent fabric of primary source materials of the highest authority. -- A. Ranganatham, "Indian Libertarian", Nov., 1972

I have not come across any single publication which narrows down the range of study to the requirements of the spiritual seeker and attains such rich comprehensiveness in fulfilling these requirements. The book presents the power of Sanskrit spiritual vocabulary the mystical and Philosophical terms and their entitled meanings which help us map out precisely the realms of the Superconscient in man. -- Prof. V.K. Gokak, Padmashri, Retired Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore Univeristy

It is an excellent publication dealing with the spiritual vocabulary of the main Sanskrit texts. The fascinating treatment of the subject, the novel approach and sincerity of scholarship make the publication unique. Dr. Tyberg has laid all lovers of Sanskrit under a deep debt of gratitude. -- Shankara Narayana, "The Indian Review", Madras, August, 1972.

One must admire the boldness and originality with which Dr. Tyberg has performed her difficult task; she has justified the name Jyotipriya (Lover of Light) given her by Sri Aurobindo. -- Sanat K. Banerji, "Mother India", 1972.

She combines with her creative genius the teachings of Sanskrit and Hinduism in an unique manner. Her presentation of Sanskrit and the great truths that its writings contain is brilliant. It is a direct method of teaching truths through a language, and deserves to be followed by both eastern and Western teachers of the subject. -- Late Dr. B.L. Atreya, Padmabhusan, Benares Hindu University

From the Publisher
Latest book of Dr. Judith M. Tyberg, Founder of the East-West Cultural Center of Los Angeles, noted Sanskrit scholar and teacher, graduate of Benares Hindu University and one of the Wests leading authorities on Sanskrit and eastern Philosophy and its interpretation. This beautifully printed 300-page book contains the explanation of some 2000 Sanskrit spiritual, philosophical and religious terms of the wisdom-scriptures of ancient and modern India.

From the Author
Sanskrit is the ancient language of thousands of sacred scriptures of the Sanatana dharma or Eternal Truth revealed down the ages in India. Because these Sanskrit writings are still the living guides for the moral, aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual life of the Indian peoples, to be able to express and to understand the Sanskrit terms of this lofty wisdom is to discover the heart of the culture of this ancient people and a richly laden aspect of the Divine in manifestation.

Sanskrit is rich in words dealing with the inner mysteries and workings of the mind, heart, soul and spirit, with the many states of consciousness in waking, sleeping and after-death life, with the origin, evolution and destiny of beings of all realms, and with the glorious descriptions of the Divine and Its infinite manifestations. These words having been ringing with these high meanings for many ages for they have been kept alive with truth by an unending series of seers and sages and realized souls, called in India by many names: swamis, acharyas, sadhus, sannyasins, mahatmas, yogins, avataras and rishis.

In this age when men are responding to a spiritual need for unity and brotherhood among all nations of the world, we find a spiritual vocabulary being drawn from the rich treasury of Sanskrit terminology because these words are already mature and ripe with divine truths. Even our western sciences have adopted words from the Latin and Greek in order to express more clearly their conceptions. Why have they done this? Because modern languages were seemingly inadequate and the Latin and Greek languages already possessed appropriate roots and expressions for these ideas. The initial difficulty of learning the technical scientific terms is nothing compared to the vast fields of information open to us once we have mastered this terminology. So it will be with these Sanskrit mystical and philosophical terms and their meanings a great enlightenment will dawn with an ever-increasing intuitive faculty as a result of being able to delve deeper into the wisdom-treasury of Divine Revelation. "To know truly is to be" is one of the old Vedantic precepts helping the disciples on his path to God-Realization.
